• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “The Big Sombrero” with Gene Autry, “Oh You Beautiful Doll” with June Haver and Mark Stevens, and “Task Force” with Gary Cooper and Jane Wyatt.

• Andrew Peters, oldest citizen of Corning, died Monday evening at the Fairfax Community Hospital at the age of 91 years, 4 months, and 16 days. Andrew was born at Hemme’s Landing, one and one-half miles southwest of the present town of Corning, on April 5, 1859. Hemme’s Landing was on the old river port and at the time of Mr. Peter’s birth, Corning had not yet been founded.

• Loraine Hopkins of Rock Port and Dean Farley have taken over the management of the Westboro Community Theatre. They are having shows on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights.

• Specials at B.P. Hunter Stores in Fairfax include: apple butter, 28-ounce jar for 19¢; farm-style bread, 2 loaves for 25¢; fresh pork back bones, 15¢ per pound; and fresh ground beef, 55¢ per pound.

August 28, 1975

• Fairfax R-III’s fall term began Wednesday morning, August 27. Approximately 165 students reported for classes in the elementary and 160 in the junior high and high school. Five new teachers have been employed to fill out the faculty: Garey Smith – commerce, coach; Robert Cotter – math, science; Mrs. Lenora Miles – pep club, library; Jim Jones – sixth grade; and Miss Sara Barksdale – art. The first football game is scheduled for Friday, September 5, at Burlington Junction.

• Specials at Hunter’s Hy-Klas Food Store in Fairfax include: Van Camp’s Pork and Beans, 4 16-ounce cans for $1; Armour Star sliced bacon, 1 pound package for $1.89; and sweet and juicy peaches, 29¢ per pound.

• Several couples from the Fairfax area joined 132 other couples from surrounding areas for a chartered jet flight to New Orleans on an MFA sponsored trip. They stayed in a hotel in the Latin Quarters on Bourbon Street and several saw Al Hirt at his own club. A creole lunch was served in the slave quarters of a very old plantation home called the Hermitage Mansion, which was used in the movie “Long Hot Summer.”

August 24, 2000

• Gene and Norma Bradfield were chosen by the Fairfax Optimist Club as Parade Grand Marshals for the Fairfax Fair. The Bradfields just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Kara Kemerling was named Miss Fairfax and Sarah Scarbrough was crowned Junior Miss Fairfax. Little Mr. and Miss Fairfax were Jase Barnes and Krynn Prater.

• A new home for Dolores Hawkins was lowered onto its foundation from a crane Tuesday, August 22, in Fairfax. It is a factory built, All-American Home.

• Wanda Mae Minter, 77, passed away Thursday, August 17, at Pleasant View. Wanda was born April 12, 1923, in Watson. She obtained her R.N. degree and entered the United States Army. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and courageously served her country as an army nurse in the India/Burma Theater in World War II.
