• Dr. C.D. Haskell brightened the appearance of his office building on Main Street this week by putting in an entirely new front of asbestos siding. Green shingles on a roof over the doorway are an attractive contrast.
• A baby boy weighing eight pounds and six ounces was born early Tuesday at Fairfax Community Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. R.S. McAdams of Tarkio. The baby, named Kenneth, has a sister, Virginia, and a brother, Robert.
• Quite an increase over last year’s attendance is reported this year at York school near Tarkio. Thirteen pupils started school there Monday whereas there were only four last year. Mrs. Lottie Mallicoat of Tarkio is the teacher.
• An enrollment of 439 students in the Tarkio public schools this year shows a decrease from last year’s 474. There are 199 students registered in grades 7 through 12 and 240 in kindergarten through sixth.
• Bill O’Bannon of Tarkio was backing his panel truck to the edge of the Missouri River to pull a boat onto the bank about four miles west of Watson Saturday when the brakes on the truck gave out and the truck sank to a depth of 30 feet. Mr. O’Bannan was able to swim out an open window and make it to the surface before swimming the backstroke approximately 15 feet to shore.

• The Farmers and Valley Bank of Tarkio is displaying 63 items and three lamps made by kiln fire and created by Mrs. Ruth Whigham of Blanchard, Iowa. The items feature China painting and glasses, lamps, and shades.
• Over 700 people attended the Mule Barn Theatre Museum’s antique sale and flea market in Tarkio last Saturday at the Community Building. There were 27 booths located inside the building and 16 on the lawn outside.
• Finishing in sixth place at the Heart of America Marathon held in Columbia September 1 was former Tarkio runner Ivan Torres, now of Hutchinson, Kansas. His time was 2 hours, 45 minutes, and 48 seconds. In seventh place was Bill Fox of Tarkio with a time of 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 30 seconds. Tarkio High School junior Phil Lane finished 78th with a time of 5 hours, 7 minutes, and 18 seconds.
• The Tarkio Indians’ high school football team defeated the highly touted Rock Port Blue Jays in a final score of 20 to 0 Friday night in Tarkio.
• From a high of 93 on September 3, Tarkio’s temperature dipped to a chilly 48 on the 6th.
September 7, 2000
• Ask Elsie Fae column: “When the family went to Wisconsin last week, I asked #1 daughter, Mary Beth, if she wanted to ride with me. She said yes, but then told everyone she was ‘driving Miss Daisy.’ Next time, Miss Daisy will drive herself and Ms. Mary Beth can take the bus.”
• Tarkio High School is celebrating its fall homecoming this week September 4-8. This year’s theme is “Olympics” in conjunction with the Olympic events taking place in Sydney, Australia. King and queen candidates are Jared Hall, Rick Masonbrink, Tyler Rolofson, Casie Lesher, Beth Pearson, and Ashely Poptanycz.
• Channels 60 and 61 on the new and improved Atchison County Digital Services cable system offer Atchison County’s local programming.
