September 8, 1950

• Joe Wright of Langdon joined some 75 other people from this area on Wednesday for a personally-conducted 18-day tour of the Pacific Northwest, Canada, and Alaska. The tour is under the guidance of Edward May and Merrill Langfitt of radio station KMA in Shenandoah, Iowa.

• The Rock Port Schools got off to a good start Monday morning with an enrollment of 346. Of that number, 152 are in high school and 194 are in the grades.

• Orville Loomis was elected to the senior vice-commander of the state of Missouri at the annual state convention of the American Legion held in Kansas City on Tuesday. This office is the second highest Legion post in the state and a great honor for Loomis and the Ralph Greer Post No. 49 of Rock Port, of which Loomis is a member. The honor guard of the Rock Port post marched in the parade held there on Monday.

September 4, 1975

• The Missouri Department of Conservation recently added large mouth bass to the picturesque Charity Lake in northwestern Atchison County. The waters were stocked with 343 large mouth bass ranging in size from 7 to 11 inches.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “The Longest Yard” with Burt Reynolds.

• Cox’s Conglomerations: “Eight tenths and a spider that had lived there all summer was what was in the rain gauge. Even though we lost our pet, we were thankful for every drop.”

• Mr. and Mrs. Everett Heard of Watson celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary Sunday. They were married August 27, 1927. They have eight children, 32 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

• Rock Port R-II Schools began classes August 27 with 707 students. The enrollment showed an increase of 10 over last year. The largest class this year is the sixth grade with 67 pupils. The smallest class is the first grade with 43 pupils.

• Stanton Grain Co. is building a new weight scale at the Rock Port plant which will be the largest in the county. The new scale will be 70 feet long and have a 200,000 pound capacity.

August 31, 2000

• Rock Port High School graduate Clint Gayler has been selected to represent Rotary District 6040 on a Rotary Ambassadoral Scholarship to Ireland. Clint graduated in May from William Jewell College with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and business administration. He will continue his studies in philosophy as well as Greek and Roman civilizations at the University of Cork, Ireland.

• A double birthday party was held at Pleasant View for residents Fern Fentiman and Opal Madron on Wednesday, August 30. Fern turned 100 and Opal turned 97.

• Chats: “The salute to O.L. Chastain is well deserved! He was recognized for his years of dedicated service at halftime of the Friday night football game and a get-together afterward. Loraine has put 30 years in keeping Rock Port R-II up and running. He has seen that the buildings have been maintained properly and the buses were safe and road worthy.”

• Actor and motivational speaker Redge Green spoke to Rock Port and Fairfax High School students at an assembly in the Rock Port gym. At the age of six, Redge was shot and paralyzed from the waist down during a fight between two neighbors in his hometown of Richmond, California. He became an actor at 13 and has since been in multiple movies and television shows including Different Strokes and Highway to Heaven, but is most well-known for playing Little Chris in the movie Boyz N The Hood.
