September 15, 1950

• Fall weather brought coats out of many clothes closets as temperatures hovered on the chilly side this past week, ranging from a minimum of 42 on September 8 to a maximum of 81 on September 8, 9, and 10.

• A near capacity audience filled the Tarkio College chapel last Thursday for the opening convocation of the college’s 68th year. Dr. W. P. Gilmor, the convocation speaker from Fresno, California, used as his theme “Something to Live By.” The speaker pleaded to students to live according to the rules of life and to establish high morals as their guiding principals.

• Pfc. Beryl Wheeler wrote in a letter to his parents that he was at a communications headquarters station on the side of a mountain 25 miles from the front lines in Korea. He is with a signal corps company of an infantry division.

• Miss Helen McClure, principal of Dara Academy in Siam, spent last weekend in Tarkio as a guest of Mr. and Mrs. E.V. McCollough. Miss McClure spent five weeks visiting many points in Europe before heading to the United States, where she will spend a year with friends.

• Mrs. James Shaum, with her aunt, Mrs. Doris Murphy, was in Shenandoah, Iowa, Wednesday as a guest on the latter’s radio program, “Party Line.” Mrs. Shaum was interviewed on the air by Mrs. Murphy.

September 18, 1975

• An attractive new addition to Tarkio’s downtown business district is the remodeled and recently opened Hackett’s Dry Goods store located in the former Clardy’s building. Operated by Ed Hackett and his son, Eddy, the store features a complete line of materials and sewing notions, baby department, and all other wearing apparel and shoe department for men, ladies, and children.

• From a high of 85 degrees on the 10th, the temperature dropped to 38 on the 12th. So far in the month of September 5.70 inches of rain has fallen.

• A Tarkio High School 1972 graduate and current student at Northwest Missouri State University, Mary Jane Wilkinson, 21, died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Iowa. She was doing her student teaching in the Lewis, Iowa, elementary school.

• Cheerleaders for the 1975-76 football season are Janice Meier, Suzanne Hull, Roberta Logan, Darcy Lindsay, Leasa Bywater, and Brenda Hale.

September 14, 2000

• Tyler Rolofson was crowned Tarkio High School Fall Homecoming King and Ashely Poptanycz was crowned queen following the varsity football victory over West Platte at Kyle Field in Tarkio Friday, September 8.

• Tarkio High School students volunteered their time on Saturday, September 9, to conduct a survey of Tarkio residents addressing such issues as the Tarkio Police Department needs, Tarkio Street Department needs, Tarkio Library needs, Tarkio R-I School District needs, community volunteerism, etc. The survey is being funded by Parent Link with the results helping to create a vision of services desired in this community.

• Kevin Boos, author, storyteller, traveler, and adventurer in the mountains and canyons of the United States Pacific Northwest, conducted reading and writing workshops at Tarkio Elementary and Tarkio Academy.

• A birthday card shower is planned for Marie Amthor, who will be celebrating her 102nd birthday Thursday, September 21, 2000.
