September 22, 1950

• Showing at the Paramount in Rock Port: “Oklahoma Badlands” with Rocky Lane and “A Kiss For Corliss” with Shirley Temple.

• John Fahsler, 32-year-old Phelps City resident, died Sunday at a veterans hospital following burns suffered when an oil stove exploded in his home Thursday. He extinguished the flames on his clothing then drove to the home of a neighbor for help.

• W.W. Holliway was one of the heavy winners on his blooms at the dahlia show held by the Missouri Valley Dahlia Association at the Y.W.C.A. in St. Joseph last Saturday.

• The Atchison County Mail has a window display of the crude contraption that Henry Moore uses to make corn meal from new-crop corn. He uses it to grate the corn and even made cornbread the other day.

• A demonstration of what the word “cooperative” means was the attendance of 800 subscribers of the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative at the company’s annual meeting in Rock Port on Thursday of last week.

September 18, 1975

• Daniel Nolan Smith, 24, Columbia, began September 1 as local management assistant for Rock Port, Tarkio, Fairfax, and Mound City under a federal and state program.

• A triple crown was won by a heavyweight Simmental steer shown by Kevin Hurst of Tarkio at the Atchison County Fair. It is the first time this has occurred since the fair incorporated the three classes of the show, weight gain, and carcass placement and has been the goal of all participants.

• Airman Virgil L. Roberts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernist L. Roberts of Langdon, has been selected for technical training in the U.S. Air Force administrative field at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. Airman Roberts attended Rock Port High School.

• Cox’s Conglomerations: “Why use toothpaste when your teeth aren’t loose?”

• Last spring, 20 energetic girls tried out for junior high twirler. They had to do the basic twirls and make up a 32-count routine to show their ingenuity. Those chosen were Julie Mobley, Yolanda Jimenez, Sandy Morton, Julie Chapple, and alternates Lori Judson and Sue Ann Schoonover.

• An auction at the Langdon school will be held at the school Saturday, September 27. Various items to be auctioned include: school desks, television sets, basketball goal, playground equipment, metal filing cabinets, flag pole, drinking fountain, ping pong tables, and much more.

September 14, 2000

• ABC-123 Preschool started another busy year of learning Tuesday, September 5, in the basement of David and Julia Shrader’s home. Sandy Holley and Sandy Smith are the teachers.

• At the September 7 Rock Port Rotary Club meeting, president Bob Batschelet presented Allan Bash with the past president’s plaque and gavel while congratulating him on completing a successful year.

• Stephan Milenkovich, a Yugoslavian violinist who made his first appearance as a soloist with an orchestra at the age of 5, will perform in concert in Brownville, Nebraska, September 17. He has played for President Ronald Reagan, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, and Pope John Paul II.

• The cross country team has kicked off the 2000 season. This year’s team includes seniors Hallie Clodfelter and Nicole Evans and juniors Hyatt Haynes, Dustin Sapp, and Chris Volker. They are coached by Jim Clodfelter.
