October 6, 1950

• The first heavy frosts of the season were in evidence Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, although the weather was not quite cold enough that vegetation showed the effects of the low temperatures.

• Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hartman of Watson received word from the war department Monday that their son, Johnny, was killed in action in Korea. His death, in late September, came at a time when the South Korean and U.N. forces had turned the tide of battle and were bringing near an end to the hostilities.

• This week’s Family of the Week is the Heyen family. Frank Heyen served as a clerk in the Rock Port post office, was a bootblack and then a barber in a barbershop, and then entered the clothing and furnishings business and operates Rock Port’s only exclusive men’s store, The Toggery. Mrs. Heyen taught in the Rock Port schools for five years, is a member of the Sorosis study club, and nurtures and guides their son, Joe, a lively youngster.

October 2, 1975

• Law enforcement personnel completed a police combat pistol course September 25 with several qualifying. The last session consisted of firing 50 shots for record, 10 at 7 yards and 40 at 25 yards from the prone, kneeling, standing, and sitting positions and also from behind a barricade. Those qualifying were Gary Chamberlain and Gary Gaines with the Rock Port Police Department, Sheriff Deputy Dave Deardorff, Judge of the City Police Court Keith Harmon, and Tarkio College Police Security Officer Bernard Napier.

• Stockholders of Fairfax Community Hospital, Inc., met Monday, September 29, and voted to dissolve its corporation and merge with Community Hospital Association, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation.

• Remodeling of the front of two businesses in Rock Port will make a fine addition to Rock Port’s Main Street. Harold Dean King, owner of King’s Auto Parts and the building next door, a laundromat, has had workmen busy installing a canopy and wood covering on the front of the building.

• A price of $97,440 or $812 per acre was paid for 120 choice acres of farmland by Mr. and Mrs. Willard Jones of Rock Port at public auction September 20 at the courthouse. The acreage was part of the land of the Anna Katharine Walter estate, located two miles east of Rock Port on Highway 136 and two miles north on Highway Y.

• Rock Port High School Homecoming King and Queen candidates are Jordan Shrader, Brent Showalter, Melanie Moore, Hilary Chamberlain, and Jessica Moran.

• Funeral services were held for Monzelle “Connie” Cochran, 78, of Rock Port. In adulthood, she worked in the clerical department for St. Joseph Light and Power, the county superintendent’s office, Dr. Emmett Settles, and the Atchison County Mail offices, and kept books for her husband Paul’s electrical contracting business.

• Workers picked 537 watermelons at Graves Memorial Demonstration and Research Field Friday, September 15. Thirteen seedless and thirteen seeded varieties were planted in May.

• Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Erdman will be celebrating 50 years together with all their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in Colorado. The Erdmans moved to Colorado after retiring from farming seven years ago. They were united in marriage on October 3, 1950, in Tarkio.
