October 20, 1950

• A 90-day sentence against a Boise, Idaho, man for striking a six-year-old boy was suspended when he promised to act his age. He is 101.

• Rock Port and Tarkio high school football teams fought to a 20-20 tie in the best game of the year for the two teams at the Pierce-Rupe athletic field at Rock Port last Friday.

• Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Smith of Langdon have received a letter from their son, Cpl. Jack D. Smith, who is with the army in Korea. He reported that it took them about two and a half months to get back to Taegon after being chased out and seeing many Koreans who suffered horrendous deaths before the 24th moved in.

• Lt. J.G. John Turner Wells, who is with the 77th Task Force of the U.S. Navy, told his parents that his ship, the U.S.S. Henderson, was one of five destroyers that participated in the Korean invasion. Four of the destroyers were struck by enemy fire, but his escaped damage. His ship and crew have been recommended for presidential citation for the part they took in the invasion.

October 16, 1975

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Return to Macon County” with Nick Nolte, Don Johnson, and Robin Mattson.

• The second graders at Rock Port Elementary are studying about the old west. Mrs. Bernice Grable donated cream and loaned her butter churn so the students could make butter just like the people they are studying about. They also made flannel cakes fried in the butter they churned.

• A new metal building is going up next to Amthor Skelly station on North Main Street. Bill Amthor is having Rolf Fertilizer Supply Company erect the 25×50 Town & Country building to house an office, display room, and service room for small engines with a tune-up shop in the rear.

• Milton Bramble of Rock Port took first in the 10-year-old’s bracket of the punt, pass, and kick zone competition held October 11 in St. Joseph. He scored a total of 226 1/2 points to earn first, which advanced him to the district competition at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City October 18.

October 12, 2000

• Rock Port Garden Club has selected the Isabel Melvin home at 608 W. Calhoun as the “Yard of the Month.”

• Rock Port Municipal Utilities sponsored a coloring contest for the sixth grade classes at Rock Port Elementary School. Winners were: Max Anderson and Jared McMahon, first; Bret Baldwin and Tarah Garst, second; and Russell Evans and Chance Esser, third.

• Bill Andrews was named Rock Port Optimist of the Year at the annual dinner October 6. Newly elected officials are: Wally Amthor, president; Billy Thomas, vice-president; Richard Fentiman, secretary/treasurer; and Carol Herron, past president.

• Missouri First Lady Jean Carnahan visited Atchison, Holt, Nodaway, and Andrew counties Monday, October 9, campaigning for her husband, Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan, on behalf of his U.S. Senate campaign. She also visited the elementary schools in Mound City, Savannah and Rock Port, where she read to the kindergarten students.

• The 1999-2000 MSHSAA Sportsmanship Award recipients were Steven Proctor and Taya Moore. Steven earned the honor for both football and wrestling and Taya was honored in volleyball, basketball, and track.
