December 8, 1950

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “In A Lonely Place” starring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame and “Cargo to Capetown.”

• George I. Beasing, following his annual custom, entertained his fellow workers at the Bank of Atchison County and members of their families at a wild game supper at the Central Cafe Tuesday evening. The serving included wild ducks and geese killed by Beasing and his bank associate, Bob Harmon.

• The E.H. Dierks Lumber & Coal Co. will be sold at auction December 20. Dierks is now located at Canon City, Colorado, where he has two lumberyards.

• Seven members of the Rock Port fire department made a run to the C.J. Waugh country home, about two miles southeast of town, about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, answering an alarm when a brooder house caught fire. The small building was little more than 15 feet from the Waugh residence, but the firemen, in spite of a strong northwest wind, managed to keep the house from being burned. Firemen who made the run included Chief O.A. Loomis, Byron Bertram, Sam Bennington, Buck Greer, Wakefield Hall, Joe Gaines, Jr., and Wesley Christen.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “The Return of the Pink Panther,” starring Peter Sellers, Christopher Plummer, Catherine Schell, and Herbert Lom.

• Rock Port has the opportunity to acquire the Langdon Depot as part of the Bicentennial celebration according to information presented by Pastor Herbert Johnson, head of the city Bicentennial Committee. The building, approximately 15×50 feet, contains the dispatch office, waiting room, and baggage room.

• Sue Knierim, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Knierim, Rock Port, is competing this week for the title of Miss Rodeo America at Oklahoma City. The pageant will be held in conjunction with the National Finals where Miss Knierim will be representing Iowa as Miss Rodeo Iowa.

• “Spirit of Tomorrow” was the theme of the annual 4-H Member Recognition Program, held November 23 at the Rock Port R-II School cafeteria.

• Jill Webster, daughter of John and Judy Webster, has been chosen as the Optimist Club’s Teenager of the Month.

• The Atchison County Commission will hold a bond burning ceremony Tuesday, December 5, at Pleasant View Nursing Home. Final payment on the 1980 revenue bonds, used to finance the cost of replacing the old two-story county nursing home facility, will be made December 1. The $900,000 bond issue was authorized in an election on November 4, 1980.

• Josh Zach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Zach, was named to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.” Josh is currently enrolled in the building construction technology program at Southeast Community College, Milford, Nebraska.

• Angela Deatz, Rock Port, was inducted into the Peru State College chapter of Kappa Delta Pi.
