• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Destination Tokyo” with Cary Grant and John Garfield, “A Life Of Her Own” with Lana Turner and Ray Milland, and “Dakota Lil.”

• Specials at Hansen’s in Tarkio include: 20 piece set of dishes, $1.98; Charmin toilet tissue, 4 rolls for 33¢; and Armour’s cloverbloom cheese food, 2 pound box for 59¢.

• The Tarkio Women’s Club will sponsor a community Christmas program which will feature a pageant, “They Found A Babe.” A children’s choir of 90 voices under the direction of Mrs. Linnius Doughty will be heard in several numbers.

• Bill Klein and Jerry Ryan have leased the Texaco Station at 1st and Main streets in Tarkio from Melvin Brothers Oil Company of Rock Port and have purchased the stock from Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Flesner, who formerly leased the station. Harry Ivy will be an employee and Cassie Porter will continue operation of the lunch business there.

December 18, 1975

• Tarkio’s high temperature of 63 degrees was recorded on December 10th and the low of 6 degrees was recorded on the 15th.

• The Avalanche has entered a new era in printing this week, as the Christmas greeting sections of our paper are brought to you by the new offset process. One of the advantages you will discover is the two colors, red and black, which could not be done using the old letter-press process.

• Outdoor lighting contest winners for individual homes in Tarkio are: fantasy – Jack Hixson, 701 N. 6th; and religious – Dean Farley, 812 N. 5th.

• The Tarkio Elementary Bicentennial Chorus will be featured on KQTV Channel 2 of St. Joseph on the program, “Hello Young America.” The chorus, made up of elementary students in grades three through six, 60 voices in all, will sing two Christmas songs and talk with Santa Claus.

December 14, 2000

  A four-inch main water line in Tarkio broke on Wednesday, December 6. The break occurred at 10th and College streets. The cause is unknown but the city lost around 110,000 gallons of water before the water was shut off.

• The annual Elf commercials were taped at area businesses on Wednesday, December 6, in Tarkio. Elves who starred in the commercials were Doug Summa, Craig Martin, Jill Culver, Donnie Noland, Mark Barker, Eric Livengood, Kelly Rohlfsen, Craig Livengood, Billy Thomas, Christy Baugh, Michelle Quimby, and Danny Noland.

• Old building support poles from Tarkio’s Main Street have recently reappeared in Tarkio and been made into old-fashioned light poles. The one from the old Withrow’s Drug Store was placed in the front yard of Mary Lou Knepper’s home on 13th Street. Mary Lou’s mother was a Withrow. The other is a complete pole from the Hurst Building and has been put in the front yard of Thelma and Jim Woolsey’s residence on McNary Street. The globe on top is an antique globe made around the 1920s.

• Letters to Santa: “Dear Santa, I want a sled and a diary. I also want some high heels, Tweety sleeping bag, and a scarf. I love you, Santa! P.S. Do you have a Christmas tree up? Yours truly, Brianna Nelson.” “Dear Santa, I want some clothes, five toy tractors, and two alarm clocks. Love, Marcellus Lee Stillwell.”

• The Tarkio Community Garden Club met November 21 with a potluck dinner honoring the 2000 Yard-of-the-Month recipients. Over 20 people were recognized.
