• Dr. Emmett B. Settle hosted a unique mother and son dinner party Wednesday at the Central Cafe. He had arranged a long-distance telephone hookup which brought his guests conversations with three former Rock Porters – Mrs. S.S. McMillen of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Mary Chamberlain of Redlands, California, and Mrs. Nell Browning of Lewiston, Idaho.

• The Rock Port High School speech class students presented an adaptation of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” broadcast from the English room to the study hall, where the audience was seated. Bill Smith portrayed Ebeneezer Scrooge. The three spirits of Christmas were played by John Knierim, Dick Hurtig, and Gilbert Burke. Marley’s ghost was Dean Noah. Bob Cratchit was Albert Thompson and Rex Lee played Tiny Tim. Eugene Kerr was Scrooge’s nephew.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: Walt Disney’s “Escape to Witch Mountain.”

• The annual Christmas party of Sorosis was held December 17 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Cox. The dress attire was “something from the attic” and items of clothing worn by the attendees ranged in age of over 100 years to present day. Sorosis is celebrating its 78th year as an organized club in Rock Port and is the oldest club holding continuous meetings in Atchison County.

• Cox’s Conglomerations: “No wonder kids today like to grow so much hair. Jesus was mostly depicted with long hair and beard and so is Santa Claus.”

• The Rock Port High School Christmas Ball prince and princess candidates are Sean Easley, Doug Walter, Scott Chamberlain, Lori Bogenreif, Susan Burke, and Deon Wessler.

• Fifteen people claimed their $50 gift certificates to Rock Port businesses in the Chamber Christmas drawing. Winners in the home decorating contest were Bob Leisman, Conley Bennington, and Michael Minter.

• The Rock Port Blue Jays basketball team picked up its first conference win of the season by defeating the Fairfax Bulldogs 67-64. Gerry Markham paced the Jays with 26 points and 18 rebounds.

December 21, 2000

• Kavin and Jennifer Wood lost their home and most of their belongings to fire Tuesday morning. The Woods have three small boys, including a newborn.

• Three Rock Port Blue Jays were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the football team by radio station KAAN in Bethany. Jordan Shrader, Nick Gray, and Jared Meyerkorth were named to KAAN’s All-Star Team out of players from northwest Missouri and southeast Iowa.

• “Dear Santa, Mom and I will leave you Oreos and a Coke for a snack. I have to have my tonsils out on the 20th so I hope I am O.K. by Christmas Day. I would like a snowboard and a Poochi. Thank you. Love, Chandler Farmer”
