January 5, 1951

• Paul Bradney, proprietor of Rock Port’s frozen food lockers, is erecting a substantial building on lots in Sickler’s Addition. For the time being, Mr. Bradney hopes to utilize the building for living quarters, with the intention of later converting it to a garage and putting up a residence.

• Customers of Rock Port’s banks found them closed for the New Year holiday last Monday, but that did not mean a day of rest for the working personnel, who were busy at both institutions throughout the day.

• Charles Fischer, who has been employed at Heckel’s Produce since his graduation from the local high school, has joined the navy and is scheduled to report for training January 11.

• Mr. and Mrs. Duane Deatz are the parents of their first baby, an 8-pound boy who was born December 26 at the Hamburg Hospital. He has been named Michael Duane.

January 1, 1976

• A surprise farewell party was held December 29 for Mrs. Helen Greer, deputy circuit clerk and recorder for over 31 years, in the courtroom at the Atchison County Courthouse.

• Postal rates were again increased effective December 31, raising the rate for first class letters from 10¢ to 13¢ for the first ounce and 11¢ for each additional ounce. Postal cards will now cost 9¢, up from the previous 7¢.

• Mr. and Mrs. Dan Clodfelter, Hamburg, Iowa, are the parents of a son, Jamie Daniel, born December 27 at the Grape Hospital in Hamburg.

• “Walking Tall, Part 2” is showing at the Paramount Theatre.

• The Dairy Sweet, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Max Thomas, closed December 23 for remodeling and will reopen January 5. Improvements include making a larger kitchen area by taking out the drive-up service windows, leaving only the dining service.

January 4, 2001

• Atchison County officials elected in November were sworn in by Dale Faulkner, county clerk. They are: Sheriff Dennis Martin, Public Administrator Karen Lester, South District Commissioner Kent Fisher, Coroner Mike Minter, North District Commissioner Larry Hicks, and Assessor Lori Jones.

• Roger Prokes, Maryville, was sworn in as the new Fourth Circuit Judge December 28 at the Nodaway County Courthouse.

• The Rock Port Market advertised the following specials: cauliflower, $1.29 per head; oranges, 4 for $1; potatoes, $1.99 for a 10 pound bag; and red delicious apples, 59¢ per pound.

• Jeffery Brion and Brandy Paris announce the birth of their son, Treyton James, born December 28, 2000.

• The Atchison County Mail begins its 124th year with this issue. Subscriptions are $22.00 in Atchison, Holt, and Nodaway counties. All other subscriptions are $27.50.
