January 12, 1951

• Showing at The Tarkio Theatre: “Rough Shod,” “Beware of Blondie,” “Bombadier,” “Two Weeks with Love,” and “Barricade.”

• The Tarkio branch of the Atchison County Library is closed for renovations which will be completed around February 1. Walls and ceilings are being repainted, new inlaid linoleum installed, fluorescent lighting added, the front of the building repainted, and the yard at the rear graveled for bookmobile accommodation.

• Construction was completed last week on a 16×18 foot building owned by Bill Klein and Jerry Ryan just south of the Texaco Station on First Street, just off of Main Street. The building will house Cassie’s Castle, a cafe leased by Cassie Porter. Mrs. Ollie Hall and Mrs. David McMillan are employees.

• First enrollee for the 1951-52 academic year at Tarkio College is Yasno Sakaniwa of Tokyo, Japan. The student attended Keio University at Tokyo and will be a junior at Tarkio College.

• Funeral services were held Sunday in Rock Port for pioneer resident of Atchison County Jane Tourtelotte, 89. She and her family came from Nebraska, crossing the Missouri River on ferry or flatboat with the livestock and household possessions and lived in a log cabin at Center Point.

• Specials at Hansen’s at Tarkio include: Canadian bacon, 1/2 pound 39¢; Perry’s dog food, 3 for 25¢; Skippy peanut butter, 39¢; Northern tissue, 9¢; and large sweet onions, 4¢ per pound.

January 15, 1976

• The Tarkio College Lady Owls defeated the University of Kansas 76-64 in a game played in Tarkio Friday, January 9. All-American Deb Kahler scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Linda Grumley came off the bench in the second half to score 14 points, shooting a sizzling 67% from the field.

• Funeral services were held January 12 for William Frank Whitlow, 69, of Tarkio. A graduate of Tarkio High School and Tarkio College, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force during WWII and later operated his own Buick dealership in Tarkio for many years.

• Northwest Lodge Number 358 A.F. & A.M. held an open installation of officers on Saturday, January 10. For the first time since the Tarkio lodge was chartered in 1884, a father and his two sons hold the top three offices. Loren Brown was installed as Worshipful Master, Larry Brown as Senior Warden, and Lyle Brown as Junior Warden. A plaque was presented to Paul Lester for his donation of time, labor, and money to the lodge.

• Miss Teddi Craven has received an invitation from Prof. Al G. Wright, Conductor, to join the United States Collegiate Wind Band, which will tour Europe and England next summer. Teddi is a senior trumpet player at Tarkio High School.

January 11, 2001

• P.E.O. members made a donation of $715 for the construction of the new resource center in Tarkio.

• The benefit chili supper and basketball games held in honor of Stephanie Erdman of Rock Port on Saturday, January 6, at Heartland Recreation Center in Tarkio was a huge success. Funds totalling approximately $3,500 were collected for Erdman, who is suffering from a rare form of leukemia.

• A new, computerized Hunter Alignment machine is now in place at Quality Auto Repair in Tarkio. The machine will do front wheel and four-wheel alignments.
