February 2, 1951

• The Tarkio High School Band will hold its winter concert February 7 in the Tarkio High School Auditorium. Admission is 35¢ with proceeds going toward a tape recorder.

• Showing at The Tarkio theatre: “Dreaming Out Loud,” “Return Of The Frontiersman,” “No Man of Her Own,” “Breakthrough,” and “Our Very Own.”

• Bitter cold weather went from bad to worse this past week as the first day of February was ushered in at 14 degrees below zero.

•A free sewing class will be offered at Tarkio High School through the state department of education as one of the adult education programs being offered. Miss Thelma Stafford will be the instructor.

• Funeral services were held Monday at the Christian Church for Dr. C.D. Haskell. The doctor practiced medicine in Tarkio and was pastor of the Christian Church.

February 5, 1976

• A giant snowman was built on Main Street by three youngsters, Sue Lynne Sager, Mike Sager, and John Slaughter who were out Saturday enjoying the mild weather.

• Robert Merrill, leading baritone of the Metropolitan Opera and one of the world’s most celebrated artists, will appear in concert on the Tarkio College campus March 1 at Schechter Auditorium.

• An evening of fun has been planned for February 13 by the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce. Al Fike will provide the entertainment at the Community Building. His talents as a singer, ragtime pianist and dancer have seen him performing in many nightclubs.

• Ask Elsie Fae column: “When seeing Dr. Carpenter this week and having decided to examine me, he was fumbling with the buttons on my dress. When I asked if he needed help with the unbuttoning, he said, ‘No, I need the practice.’” “Bemoaning my lack of interest in travel, I was pointing out to my daughter Jane that only 10 years ago I was deeply disappointed because I couldn’t afford to join a group going to India…But today, there is not enough money to pay me to go on such a trek. Her response (having been dragged by her parents all over Africa) was, ‘The only unchartered territory I want to enter is a freshly made bed.’ We have finally found a common ground.”

• Jared Hall and Casie Lesher were named Tarkio High School Wrestling Homecoming King and Queen Thursday, January 25.

• Tarkio High School’s MAP testing scores were recently recognized as being among the best in the state. The senior class placed fifth in high school social studies.

• Farmers State Bank employees have been staying busy wrapping pennies for Tarkio Elementary. The elementary students are holding a contest to see which class can collect the most pennies, with all funds going to the construction of the new resource center. So far, approximately $900 has been collected.

• Sarawn and Charlie Kirwan are proud to announce the birth of a daughter, Kaely Renee, on January 23 at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax. She weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces.
