February 2, 1951
• Lieut. Rob R. Greenley has been assigned to the guided missile and rocket experimental base at Alamogordo, New Mexico. He is attached to the 9081st aircraft maintenance squadron. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, attended the Montana School of Mines in Butte, the University of California in Berkeley, and the navy quartermaster school.
• Local residents have been grumbling about the negative temps we’ve had lately, but why should we complain? A 22-year-old soldier who recently returned from Korea stopped at the Thompson & Miller service station and told of his suffering from frostbite in that country. It was so bad he lost parts of his fingers and one hand is still badly swollen and one of his legs is still being treated. At times, the soldiers were fighting in temperatures as low as 45 degrees below zero.
February 5, 1976
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: Walt Disney’s “Bambi” and “RollerBall.”
• Kimosabi column: “How do you choose when to trade cars? Our first car was traded when we could no longer stand the smell of upset diaper pails and wet diapers on the floor. The second was traded after so many erps in the back seat from car sickness. Another car was traded after the son left the back window down all night and it rained. The car smelled of mildew from then on. The current car now smells like pickled pigs feet after two glass jars of special spiced knockwurst were transported, but one broke in the car.”
• Winter weather dropped six inches of heavy snow on Rock Port. The city crew removed a load of snow every 10 minutes for three hours making approximately 18-20 loads of snow removed.
February 1, 2001
• Seven Rock Port Blue Jay wrestlers received All-Conference honors with their finishes at the Grand River Conference wrestling tournament held in Bethany January 27. Honorees included Shawn Shineman, Trystan Lair, Cory Stoner, Colby Roup, Cory Stanton, Travis Holmes, and Andy Bremer.
• On January 20th, 16 Rock Port FFA members traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa, for the annual movie and pizza party. They ate at Godfather’s Pizza and then went to Mall of the Bluffs where they could either shop or watch a movie.
• Following a recent trip “home” to El Salvador, where she had not been in 22 years, a 7.6 earthquake rocked the country, damaging Alma Clodfelter’s childhood town, as well as eight surrounding villages.
• Kevin and Jolene Cue of Rock Port are pleased to announce the birth of their baby girl, Ashley Janae, born January 25.
• Dr. Jeff Powell with Powell Optometry has moved to 518 S. Main Street. Attorney-at-Law Zel Fischer has moved to 107 S. Main Street. The Atchison County Development Corporation moved to 105 S. Main Street.
• Basketball homecoming candidates are Erica Corken, Anne Reynolds, Jill Webster, Melanie Moore, and Jordan Shrader.
