• Local barber shops – Goodall, Watkins, Schisler, and Wheeler – are advertising haircuts for $1 starting February 12.
• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “March Of The Wooden Soldiers,” “Sunset In The West” with Roy Rogers and Trigger, “Please Believe Me,” “All About Eve,” and “The Prince Of Peace.”
• Jim Grebe has leased the coffee shop at the Walnut Inn from M.F. Patterson and will take possession March 1. He will not be associated in the management of the business, however, as he will continue with his work as city disposal agent.
• Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Mumford of Westboro will observe their golden wedding anniversary February 20. The couple was married on that day in 1901 at Forest City, Missouri, at the home of the bride’s mother. Mr. Mumford has been associated for the past 22 years with the State Farm Automobile Insurance Company.

• Mrs. Edna Swift Butler was pleasantly surprised last week upon learning she is now a registered lifetime member of the Songwriters Club of America. Edna, a Pleasant View Nursing home resident formerly of Tarkio, composed many poems over the years. Through the efforts of a niece, music was written for one of the poems. The song, “Nightfall,” was played for Mrs. Butler for the first time last Thursday.
• William C. Phelps, Missouri Lieutenant Governor, will be the guest speaker at the Tarkio Community Betterment Awards Banquet March 8th at Eppley Lounge at Tarkio College. Phelps set up the state’s first Ombudsman program to handle citizen complaints.
• Schools around the state are feeling a financial crunch. In a recent survey released by the Missouri Teachers Association, the percentages of many school costs have skyrocketed.
• The proposal to build a new fire station and fire-safety center in Tarkio was approved by voters in the special bond election held February 10. “Yes” votes outnumbered “No” votes 5 to 1.

• The Tarkio High School Winter Homecoming King and Queen candidates are Adam Rolf, Brad Heits, Aaron Madron, Brett Wennihan, Charity Tubbs, Beth Pearson, and Cassia Alberti.
• Tarkio Junior High students will be presenting “The Trial of Goldilocks” February 17. Angie Hancock is Goldilocks. David McEnaney is the Judge. Ben Hurst is the prosecuting attorney. Brittany Hogue is the lawyer, Doug Low the clerk, Travis Hurst Papa Bear, Johnna Hospodka Mama Bear, and Kenzi Fischer Baby Bear.
• Andrea Murphy of rural Tarkio marched in the United States Presidential Inaugural Parade for George W. Bush Saturday, January 20, in Washington, D.C., as part of the Mizzou Marching Band.
• Tarkio High School wrestlers Jared Hall, Danny Tubbs, and Trenton Traughber qualified for sectionals with their district finishes. Jared placed second in the 189 pound weight class. Danny Tubbs won the 215 pound weight class. Trenton Traughber placed third in the 275 pound weight class.
