Love is in the air . . . and baby it’s cold outside!
There are lots of new things going on at the center. I am sure by now you have seen “Meal Champion” certificates. There were two Meal Champions in January: Rock Port Do it Best – In Memory of Phyllis Ottmann, and Citizens Bank & Trust. We greatly appreciate the support from our community. This is an ongoing fundraiser for the Rock Port Senior Center. All donors wishing to make a contribution as a Meal Champion will receive a certificate, shout out on social media, tax receipt upon request, and a posting of the certificate at the center. On average, food costs per day are $150. This does not include labor, packaging, or any overhead. Donors can choose to be a Meal Champion one time, monthly, weekly, quarterly, and so on. For more information, contact Maria at the center. You can also donate in honor or memory of a loved one and pick the day you wish to honor them.
Another fundraiser currently happening is a raffle for the rustic squirrel feeder supplied by James Howard Thompson. This raffle will go on until we draw near the end of March. Tickets are $2 apiece or three for $5. Come into the center to purchase or contact Maria. All proceeds raised from fundraisers and donations received ensure that we are able to continue providing meal and social services to local senior citizens.
Myrna Brooks hosted a crafting session Monday, February 2. We enjoyed social interaction while making a beautiful Valentine’s Day decorative piece from wood, twine, and festive appliques. Look for more crafting sessions to come.
We will have our “First Thursday” support group Thursday, February 5, for people living with or caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Pastor David Shadinger hosts this group the first Thursday of every month at 10:00 a.m. Refreshments are provided. Come join us and if you know someone who would benefit from this group, bring them along or spread the word.
Our annual sweetheart dinner will be Wednesday, February 11. We will have a few guessing games with prizes during dinner. Bring your sweetheart and join us for lunch.
Did you know February is Heart Health Month? Community Hospital-Fairfax will be joining us Wednesday, February 18, for blood pressure screenings from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m..
Bingo will be Tuesday, February 24. We start calling at 9:45 a.m. Come play, socialize, win prizes, and stay for lunch!
Did I say “Baby it’s cold outside?” All activities during the cold winter months are subject to cancellation due to the cold and winter weather. Some activities may not be rescheduled. Don’t forget to tune in to 960 AM, 99.1 FM or KMAland.com, St. Joe KQ2 News station and Facebook for closure updates. A rule of thumb is if the schools are closed, we are closed. Our mission is to provide nutritious meals to senior citizens to maintain independence for as long as possible, but it is hazardous to have seniors getting out in the cold and winter weather to come dine in. Also, most of our volunteers are seniors as well, we do not want to put anyone in danger. We supply meals ahead of time for such events.
Don’t forget to thank your meal delivery persons. Without them this wouldn’t be possible. We love our volunteers!
