• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Father is A Bachelor” and “The Furies” with Barb Stanwyck, Wendell Corey, and Walter Huston.

• Schooler Furniture is advertising its Valentine special of Lane Cedar Chests for $54.95. There are four models to choose from – Mahogany 18th Century chest, silver grey functional modern, walnut and paldao streamlined, and red cedar with blond oak veneer.

• Roy Haun, lifelong citizen of Fairfax, passed away suddenly about 6:30 Thursday morning of last week due to a heart attack he had had three hours earlier. He was a rural mail carrier on Route 3 out of Fairfax and had made his rounds the previous day before his death. He had been a mail carrier since 1924.

• The 25th annual Soils and Crops Conference held in Rock Port February 1 was attended by 125 farmers, despite the below zero temperature reading.

February 12, 1976

• Mr. and Mrs. Russel Ireland and their three children moved in late January to their new, all-brick home in northeast Fairfax. The attractive, new addition to town includes two bedrooms upstairs and two finished bedrooms, a family room, and bath in the basement. Mr. Ireland works at Thiesfeld Feeds and Seed and his wife is the director of nursing at Fairfax Community Hospital.

• The Guardian, the Fairfax R-3 school yearbook, has a new staff. Debbie Gigliotti is the editor-in-chief and other members include: Kim Daily, assistant editor; Rosalie Graves, business manager; Debbie Moore, assistant business manager; Brenda Simmons, circulation manager; and Joy Wilson, assistant circulation manager.

• According to Everett Curry, “Dry-cleaning was the last thing on earth I ever thought of doing.” That was 30 years ago. He and his wife, Mary, owners and operators of Fairfax Cleaners, bought new equipment when they opened the business in 1946. The cleaning shop is located on Broadway, a half block off Highway 59 in a building occupied years ago by The Fairfax Forum.

• The Fairfax majorettes have been invited to perform at the halftime of the basketball game at Tarkio College Gym on Saturday, February 14. Drum majorette is Rhonda Johnson, majorette captains are DeAnna Thompson and Barb Bolton, and other majorettes are Jan Norton, Debbie Gigliotti, Shawn Kruse, Kris Fisher and Jerre Strough.

• Rev. John Chandler, pastor of the St. John’s Lutheran Church near Westboro, Missouri, was the guest speaker at the Fairfax Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday. He spoke about how the church has sponsored a South Vietnamese refugee family consisting of a mother and six children (ages 1 to 14) who fled Saigon.

• Ashley Hawkins and Jake Johnson were crowned 2001 Fairfax High School Basketball Homecoming Queen and King. Both Fairfax basketball teams were victorious in defeating the Stanberry Bulldogs’ and Lady Bulldogs’ teams.

• Golden Triangle Energy, the newly-constructed ethanol facility in Craig, Missouri, will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 17, with tours to follow. The 14 million gallon annual capacity plant will begin production the following Monday, February 19.

• Marilyn Reed has been promoted to assistant cashier at Exchange Bank of Fairfax. Marilyn has been an employee at the bank since October 1, 1992. She is the second woman ever to hold the assistant cashier position at the Exchange Bank of Fairfax in 106 years. Elizabeth Martin was the first.

• The third and sixth grade science students paired up to build simple machines utilizing household materials. The machines built by the students included gears, axles/wheels, pulleys, and inclined planes.
