• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Rogues of Sherwood Forest” with John Derek and Diana Lynn, “A Lady Takes A Chance” with Jean Arthur and John Wayne, “Sugarfoot” with Randolph Scott, and “Love That Brute” with Paul Douglas and Jean Peters.

• The Tarkio High School mixed chorus will present a program of choral music Tuesday evening in the Tarkio High School Auditorium. This year the chorus has 70 voices. Eighteen songs will be performed.

• The Walnut Inn Coffee Shop will open under new management Thursday, March 1. Mrs. Jim Grebe and Mrs. Richard Grebe will serve meals daily as well as private parties in the Bamboo Room.

• Tarkio College has received a gift of $10,000 from James Best, D.D., who graduated from the college in 1905. Dr. Best designated the funds for the endowment of the chair of philosophy and psychology in honor of Dr. Thompson and stated that the money was given in loving memory of his deceased wife, Mrs. Jane Elizabeth Best.

• Lt. James L. McCall of the United States Air Force has been promoted to captain. An intelligence officer and pilot, he is stationed at a base in Japan. Captain McCall has been in the service for more than eight years and during WWII, served in India and China.

February 26, 1976

• The Tarkio R-I CTA honored Carlotta White as “Teacher of the Year.” Carlotta has taught in the Tarkio Elementary School for 15 years.

• Mrs. Mason Houghton and Mrs. Jim Shaum, representing the Tarkio Bicentennial Committee, presented a new Bicentennial flag to the Tarkio R-I Schools. The flag will hang beneath the American flag at the elementary.

• Walter Greene, formerly of Tarkio and now of Apple Valley, California, has written that he will compose the music for the historical pageant written by Marilyn Nixon for the Bicentennial observance. The pageant depicts history of Atchison County and especially Tarkio and includes a number of original lyrics. Mr. Greene has done several musical arrangements for Hollywood motion pictures. He visits Tarkio often to see his mother, Mrs. Ina Greene.

• Kitchen equipment has arrived at the new Atchison County Senior Citizens Center and Nutrition Site in Tarkio. Besides the most recent shipment of equipment, the center has had floors prepared, drapes hung, and smaller kitchen equipment from Curfman’s and Vic’s Hardware set up for preparation of the opening.

February 22, 2001

• Two more days of school were missed at Tarkio R-I due to winter weather. All Atchison County schools were closed Wednesday and Thursday, February 14 and 15, due to icy road conditions.

• The Tarkio/Westboro Community Care Facility moved the food pantry from 404 Main Street to 415 Main Street in Tarkio.

• Northview Manor in Tarkio recognized its dietary department for Pride in Food Service Week. Workers in the dietary department include: Terry Hawkins, dietary manager; Angie Dow, Linda Hicks, and Jolene Bruns, cooks; and Jenny Driskell, Nancy Campbell, Donna Grossman, and Kay Sturtz, dietary aides.
