• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “The Great Rupert” with Jimmy Durante, “Tripoli” with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, “The Secret Fury” with Claudette Colbert, and “Great Guns” with Laurel and Hardy.
• Specials at Lee Pemberton & Sons Hy-Klas Food Stores and Locker Service in Rock Port: boneless catfish fillets, 47¢ per pound, and Velveeta cheese, 2 pound box for 89¢.
• John Hunt, city mail carrier, went to the veterans hospital in Wadsworth, Kansas, to have a needle removed from his body. The needle has been there since he was a child, some 30 years, but has never seriously affected him.
• Miss Colleen Ammons of Rock Port and her dancing partner Wilbur Wright were judged the best talent at the annual Mardi Gras of the Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville.
February 26, 1976
• The Rock Port Fire Department responded to a Corning, Missouri, house fire and drove 14 miles through a raging blizzard with very slick roads and almost zero visibility.
• Mr. and Mrs. Henry P. Savage will observe their 62nd wedding anniversary February 25. They were married on that day in Rock Port and have lived in their home 60 of their 62 married years.
• The Atchison County chapter of Sweet Adelines, Inc., under the direction of Mrs. Curt Vogler, will present their annual show March 26. The show, “And That’s The Way It Was,” will include an American theme.
• Mr. and Mrs. Henry Maness will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, March 7, at an open house at the Watson Community Building.
• Blue Jay Corner: Did you know – Julie Walter supposedly went 60 down Main. The juniors have 90 left-over hot dogs, as well as no money, no band, and not even a place to have prom.
February 22, 2001
• Twelve students participated in the Atchison County Spelling Bee held in Rock Port February 13. Ashtin Lloyd of Rock Port won the event, which went 14 rounds, with the word astigmatism. Ben Hurst of Tarkio placed second.
• Funeral services were held for Wayne “Mandy” Thompson. Mr. Thompson served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, CV6, aircraft carrier and earned 12 major battle stars as Gunners Mate. Upon his return to Missouri, he owned and operated the Standard Oil Station in Rock Port and served on the Rock Port City Council for six years. He also managed and coached the Rock Port Cardinals baseball and basketball teams.
• Alfred Vette and Verna Vette were chosen as the Valentine’s Day King and Queen at the Rock Port Senior Center. Ernie Fries and Marie Underwood were crowned Valentine’s King and Queen at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port.
• The inaugural class of Leadership Northwest Missouri has been chosen and includes 20 members. W.C. Farmer of Rock Port and Jack Vernon of Fairfax are representing Atchison County.
