Melissa White spoke on behalf of the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce. She filled everyone in on their current plans.

 

Ashlee Driskell represented Tarkio Parks and Rec. Ashlee talked about the future plans for the tennis courts.

 

Bob Heddinger, Tarkio Superintendent, discussed the financial impact of current legislation in Jefferson City and how it could impact rural schools.

 

The Atchison County Development Corporation (ACDC) held the first of three community luncheons Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the Tarkio Nutrition Center.

Following the meal, Board President Lori Seymour welcomed everyone and introduced the guest speakers. First was Ashlee Driskell, who was representing the Tarkio Parks and Rec Board. Ashlee brought everyone up to date as to what the board has planned for the summer. They are raising funds to redo the tennis courts, adding pickleball courts to them as well. Ashlee also talked about running the concession stand at the ball parks to help defray expenses at the park. If anyone is interested in helping, reach out to the Parks and Rec Board.

Melissa White, Tarkio Chamber member, talked about the banners on Main Street that display veterans from the community. They are now accepting donations or sponsorships for banners for the senior class. The chamber is also working on welcome baskets to be given to new residents to the community. They are also working on rack cards that will be placed around town featuring businesses and services that are available.

Tarkio R-I Superintendent Bob Heddinger touched base on current legislation that will affect rural schools. Bob announced that there will be a community meeting on Thursday, March 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the TAC. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. Bob also talked about the new renovations to the elementary building. They are planning on doing this in phases so that the school can pay as they go along. There are three phases planned, with the first phase starting in the pod area of the building and then moving to the windows.

Monica Bailey wrapped up the meeting talking about all of the great things happening, including the business grants that are available to Atchison County businesses.
