March 16, 1951

• Approximately 1,500 students from about 35 schools in a tri-state area are participating in the 1951 Speech and Music Festival on the Tarkio College campus this weekend.

• An apron and overall dance will be sponsored by the Tarkio Booster Club, Inc. tonight at the Community Building here. Hatcher’s Hot Shots will play for both round and square dancing and prizes will be awarded to the best square dancing set.

• Approximately 35 Tarkio High School boys are “out for track” this year. They are coached by Howard Wheatley and John Alberti.

• Wintry blasts and three inches of snow the past week made the first day of spring seem much more remote than the calendar advises. The mercury in the seven-day period never rose above 42 degrees, as recorded last Thursday, the same day on which also occurred the week’s minimum temperature of 10 degrees.

• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Bomba on Panther Island” starring Johnny Sheffield, Allene Roberts, Lita Baron, and Charles Irwin, “Dallas” with Gary Cooper and Ruth Roman, “Lost Boundaries” with Beatrice Pearson and Mel Ferrer, and “Two Guys From Texas” with Jack Carson and Dennis Morgan.

March 18, 1976

• Tarkio junior high students selected as Citizens of the Month for February include: seventh grade – Connie Goodwin and Mark Powell; and eighth grade – Melanie Logan and Blake McIntosh.

• Westboro-Tarkio Agri-Service was honored as one of the top Cooper Feed dealers for 1975 during the firm’s “Dealer Recognition and Awards Banquet.” Kim Herrick, general manager, accepted the award.

• The Mule Barn Theatre has pulled a bit of a theatrical coup by reuniting three nationally known artists as top members of their summer season staff. Director Charles Maryan, Conductor Hans Wurman, and Choreographer Estelle Spector will be working together for the first time since 1966 when they joined forces at Chicago’s Happy Medium to create The Mad Show which toured the United States.

• The Tarkio College Women’s Basketball Team has been invited to the AIAW Small College National Tournament March 23-27 at Ashland College, Ashland, Ohio.

March 15, 2001

• A donation of around $800 was given to Tarkio’s new resource center fund after a chili/soup supper was held by Nu Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Tarkio during the District 32 Basketball Tournament in Tarkio. The fund has now reached $67,296. Nu Sigma also held a fundraiser giveaway of a Tarkio piggy bank. Erica Taylor was the Tarkio winner (five others also received a piggy bank).

• The Tarkio High School Lady Indians Basketball Team is Missouri Class 1-A Show-Me Showdown bound again. The team defeated the North Mercer Lady Cardinals on Saturday, March 10, to advance.

• The Tarkio Elementary kindergarten and first grade classes celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday March 8. Several guest readers read some of his books and they even had a visit from The Cat In The Hat himself (Casey Martin). They also dined on green eggs and ham and birthday cake.
