Last week, the City of Rock Port placed barricades around the former Rock Port Market’s south side and Cass Street restricting vehicle and foot traffic along that side. This building is in disrepair and is starting to collapse on the back side along the alley. According to Mayor JR Chaney, “Over the past several months, the condition of the Wigwam Trading Post/Old Rock Port Market building has continued to decline. After reviewing the current state of the structure and seeing the damage and deterioration firsthand, I no longer feel it is safe for people to be around the building. The building is owned by a deceased individual in Florida and ownership of the property has not been passed to anyone else at this time. Because of that, the City has placed barricades around the structure to create a safety perimeter. This is being done strictly out of caution to protect residents, visitors, and nearby businesses. When buildings reach a point where they could potentially collapse or cause injury, we have a responsibility to act.”
