• A dance sponsored by Gene Mather and Joe Leach will be held Friday, March 23, at the Tarkio Community Building. Cooper Orchestra will provide the music, which can be enjoyed for 60¢ each.

• Showing at the Tarkio theatre: “Furies” with Barbara Stanwyck, Wendell Corey, Walter Huston, and Judith Anderson, “Fairwell To Yesterday,” and  “For Heaven’s Sake” with Clifton Webb, Joan Bennett, and Robert Cummings.

• The Washington Township Rough Riders of Northboro, Iowa, will present a stage show at the Community Building here April 3. A cast of more than 50 people will be seen performing roping acts, musical numbers, comedy, and old-time melodrama.

• Coach and Mrs. Neil Gates moved from the GI Village on Tuesday to the John Davis property at 712 Elm Street. The Davises left Monday for El Paso, Texas, where Mr. Davis is serving with a hospital unit.

• The Market Basket will hold a grand opening in the spacious new building located at 608 Main Street in Tarkio. L.C. Beaty of St. Joseph is the owner of the store. Employees include: Everett Strautman, manager; Leonard Harvey, assistant manager and meat department manager; Elizabeth Glenn, produce department manager; Sadie Graham, floor sales; and Mrs. Lynath Wells, meat promotion and sales.

March 25, 1976

• Lloyd Brown of Tarkio and and C.O. Husing of Rock Port are among 97 Missouri Master Masons who will receive high honors from the International Order of DeMolay. The two men will receive the Honorary Legion of Honor.

• Mr. and Mrs. Curtis E. Nims of Westboro are parents of  their first child, Michael Raymond, who was born at Community Hospital, Fairfax, March 22 and weighed 7 pounds and 6 ounces.

• Gavin Doughty, Sr., of Tarkio was named Rotarian of the Year by Rotary International and was honored at a dinner Saturday night at the Marriott Hotel at the Kansas City International Airport.

• Fourteen Scouts received the rank of Eagle Scout at the Court of Honor held at the United Methodist Church March 21. They are J. C. VanLeuven, David Lane, Tony Bryan, Darrin Meek, Ricky Walker, Wally Ryan, Mark Jensen, Paul McIntosh, Phillip Graham, Steven Postlewait, Randy Pattee, Davy Kyle, Roger Bywater, and Jeff Hill.

• Discussion was held at the Tarkio R-I School Board meeting on the track season as track meets such as Indian Relays will not be held on the Tarkio track due to current conditions. Discussion was also held on the fact the board voted that cheerleaders are not allowed to play any other sport as cheerleading is considered a sport and students can only participate in one sport each season.

• Atchison County took the biggest hit in northwest Missouri with the new census data figures showing the county’s popuation decreased from 7,457 in 1990 to 6,430 in the 2000 census.

• The Tarkio High School Lady Indians placed third in the Class I-A Show-Me Showdown Basketball Championships.

• Ask Elsie Fae: “It was reported that a man was seen fishing in one of the potholes on Second Street. I hope Mr. Sperber doesn’t find out because I’m not sure the guy had a fishing license.”
