• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Francis” – a story of a talking Army mule.
• The Fairfax School was broken into sometime Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. The doors to the offices of Superintendent S. W. Skelton were pried open, the offices rifled, and around $15 stolen, including $2 that had been in an Easter Seal Fund box.
• Mrs. Winston Graves and Mrs. Harold K. Townsend of Fairfax were sworn in as citizens of the United States in the federal courtroom in St. Joseph Monday. Mrs. Graves is a former citizen of Italy and Mrs. Townsend is a former citizen of Austria. Both came here with their husbands after they finished their overseas service in the U.S. armed forces.
• Last week, Judge Higgins, owner of the J.H. Farm Supply of Fairfax and Higgins Farm Supply of Maryville, purchased from Burte Gomel the large building at the east end of the Fairfax business section, now housing the Craven Implement Company, local International Harvester company dealers. Mr. Higgins will move his business from its present location to this building.

• More than 1,700 Atchison County residents who are old enough to vote will not be eligible to cast ballots in the April 6 school and city elections because they are not registered to vote in the county. A total of 4,315 people are registered to vote. The number of registered voters in Atchison County has increased by 167 since April of 1975.
• Downtown Fairfax merchants are asked to participate in the annual spring street cleanup by sweeping the sidewalks and parking areas in front of their businesses.
• Residents are encouraged to come to the Fairfax Library to peruse all it has to offer. There are more than 1,000 books at the Fairfax location, as well as records and cassette tapes, tape and record players, large print books, magazines, and the three county newspapers. Mrs. Donald Adams is the local librarian.
• Specials at Hunter’s Hy-Klas Food Store in Fairfax include: 8 16-ounce bottles of Pepsi-Cola for 99¢; pork loin back ribs for 89¢ per pound; Birds Eye frozen Cool Whip, 9 ounce container for 59¢; and Lipton instant tea, 3 ounce jar for $1.49.

• Dean Krug, Monsanto seed representative, spoke to local farmers during the growers’ meeting held at MFA Agri Services in Fairfax March 15.
• The family of Evelyn Whitford will be hosting an open house Saturday, March 31, in the Fairfax Community Room in honor of Evelyn’s 80th birthday. Evelyn Ball Whitford was born March 21, 1921, on the family farm south of Fairfax.
• John Richards American Legion Post #284 will host a birthday party Monday, March 26, at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax. A silent auction will be held along with a game of bingo.
• Members of the Fairfax High School Flag Corps were selected for the upcoming 2001-2002 school year. They are Tabitha Taylor, Janah Heits, Andrea Ilsley, Jessica Wiley, Alyssa Wiley, and Lacy Moore.
• The Fairfax faculty will take on the seniors in a basketball game Thursday, March 22, in the Fairfax High School Gym. Faculty members participating include Sarah Osburn, Sandy Umbarger, Karen Burke, Brooke Osburn, Terry Hopkins, Dan Sinkhorn, Kurt Dickkut, Kelly Martin and Nancy Harrington. Seniors playing are Brian Conard, Jim Pinnell, Kyle Rentschler, Nic Smith, Ashley Hawkins, Stephanie Beck, Matt Coleman, Chris Brown, Chris Avrett, Jake Johnson, Holly Clement, Kara Kemerling, Jennifer Ray, Maria Pinzino, and Mike O’Riley.
