April 13, 1951

• John Field of Shenandoah, Iowa, a Tarkio College 1949 graduate, is the publisher of a new magazine, John Field’s Family Magazine, which made its debut last Friday, April 6.

• A spring tour for the Tarkio College Choir, under the direction of Prof. Gavin L. Doughty, will extend as far as Denver, Colorado.

• Speakers from China, Uruguay, Salt Lake City, and Birmingham will be featured in a week’s school of missions at the Tarkio Baptist Church.

• The Tarkio 7th and 8th grade travel class is heading to Omaha, Nebraska. The group will tour the Union Pacific museum, radio station WOW, and Boystown.

April 16, 1976

• Roger Riley, 13, was the youngest contestant of the Midwest Amusement Association 8-Ball Pool tournament at Peony Park Ballroom in Omaha, Nebraska. While there, Roger met Willie Mosconi, a professional player whose stunning shots were filmed in the Paul Newman movie “The Hustler.”

• The Wynn Bros. Trucking bowling team beat out its nearest opponent by 27 pins as the team rolled to the title of the A Team Division. Team members are Anne Barnett, Janet Stevens, Marge Gregg, Sharon Wynn, and Charlotte Stevens.

• The faculty at Tarkio Junior High has selected four students for the Outstanding Citizen of the Month Award for March. They are 7th graders Bobby Simpson and Ann Harmon and 8th graders Roger Riley and Julie Barnett.

April 12, 2001

• In the early morning hours of April 5, a call came in about a break-in at Dave’s Convenience Store in Tarkio. A safe had been taken. Following an investigation, the stolen property was found and three men were arrested.

• High winds caused a new job office trailer to turn over at the construction site of the Tarkio Elementary addition. Thankfully, nobody was inside and no equipment had been installed in the trailer yet.

• The Nu Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its Easter Egg Hunt in Tarkio on April 8. Winners of the event were: Jace Erwin, Shelby McCartney, Andy Schmidt, Colby Linthicum, Kaylyn McKinnon, Kaitlin Bomar, Paige Driskell, Karly Umbarger, and Jase Masonbrink.

• Phillip and Meta Hull will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house Saturday, April 21, at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Westboro, Missouri. The couple was married April 12, 1951, at the church by Meta’s father, the late Reverend F. W. Nolte.

• The Tarkio United Methodist Church will host a revival April 22-25 with evangelist Reverend Mike White from Brookfield, Missouri. Reverend White served this country as a United States Navy Chaplain from December 5, 1977, to August 1, 1998.

• Tarkio Community Awards were presented to the following: Citizen of the Year – Billie Schneider; Employee of the Year – Darlene Joesting; Farm Family of the Year – Carla and David Ripley; Lions Club Lion of the Year – Doug Summa; Tarkio Community Garden Club Award – Gerry Tohill; Tarkio Rotary Club Rotarian of the Year – Gary Riley; Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year – Helen Austin; Youth Leadership Award – Laurie Whittington; and the Tarkio Academy Employee of the Year – Jacob Stallworth.
