April 20, 1951

• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “North of the Great Divide” with Roy Rogers, Penny Edwards, and Tarkio’s own Al Sloey; “The Breaking Point” with John Garfield and Patricia Neal; “The Fighting 69th” with James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, and Dennis Morgan; and “Royal Wedding” with Fred Astaire and Anne Powell.

• Fifth and sixth grade students will present the first in a series of three assembly programs for the parents. The program to be given includes two short musical plays, “All About Spring” and “Gifts of Time.”

• As part of the community service program of their organization, the Boy Scouts held a “clean-up day” Monday and picked up all the trash and rubbish accumulations at the Community Park. Eighteen Scouts and Scoutmaster Merle Admire used a truck loaned by Howard Moore for the heavy lifting.

• Services at the Tarkio United Presbyterian Church will be held in the newly redecorated auditorium. Walls were repainted, carpet replaced, floors were resanded and refinished, brickwork repointed, a new roof added, and doors and storm windows received improvements.

April 23, 1976

• World Champion Escape Artist Mr. Charles Myrick set a new world escape record while performing at Tarkio High School April 13. Mr. Myrick did a number of magic tricks, including escaping from handcuffs, knotted rope, being tied to a chair, and a straight jacket. He then escaped from two straightjackets in one minute and one second, beating the old world record of one minute and 13 seconds.

• Plans were recently made for the Tarkio High School Junior/Senior Prom to be held May 8 at the Community Building. This year’s theme is “When Will I See You Again?”. Sophomores chosen as prom servers include Darcy Lindsay, Dianna Redfern, Kate Kyle, Connie Chaney, Lisa Stewart, Janet McIntosh, Gary Hogue, Leonard McEnaney, David Meek, Donnie Meek, Steve Hoshor, and Jeff Pattee.

• Janet Watkins has been chosen to represent the Tarkio American Legion Auxiliary at Girls’ State. Janet is a member of the National Honor Society, pep club, and T-Club, and is serving as FHS president and assistant editor of the Chieftain. She was also a member of the THS girls’ basketball team that won Regionals and now participates in track.

• Tarkio’s weather for the past week included a high of 85 on the 14th and a low of 38 on the 19th. A total of 2.90 inches of rain fell that week.

April 19, 2001

• Eighteen firemen and four fire trucks responded to a house fire at 610 Pine Street in Tarkio on Wednesday, April 11, at 9:45 p.m. The house, owned by Larry Brown, Jr., received extensive fire, smoke, and water damage.

• Tarkio High School students will present “Nightmare High School,” a comedy horror, April 21 and 22 in the auditorium.

• Mike and Dena Wennihan of Tarkio are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Troy Michael Wennihan. Troy was born Friday, April 13, at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax.

• Tarkio High School senior Ashely Poptanycz has signed to play basketball with Northwest Missouri State University. Ashely is Tarkio’s career score leader with 1,857 points.
