
The Brownville Concert Series will present Sally Mayes in “An Evening with Sally Mayes.” The New York Times calls her ‘incandescent, deliciously saucy.’ People Magazine describes her as “the kind of rich theatrical voice that elevates a show tune.” Time Magazine says, “Sally Mayes renders songs as richly nuanced as one-act plays.” The shows will be in cabaret on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, at 7:30 p.m., and in concert Sunday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m. The shows are sponsored by the J. Randel Smith and Jane Crooker Smith Charitable Trust.
Sally Mayes is a Tony-nominated actress and singer who has made a name for herself both on stage and on screen. Born in Texas, Mayes began her career in musical theater and has since become a beloved performer in the industry.
Mayes made her Broadway debut in Cy Coleman’s “Welcome to the Club.” Her standout performance in the show earned her a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. On Broadway, Sally is perhaps best known for her performance in the Roundabout Theater revival of “She Loves Me” for which she won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations. Sally appeared as Aunt Corene in “Urban Cowboy” (Drama Desk nomination). She drew raves as Mae West in the national tour of “Dirty Blonde” and also appeared in the Broadway revival of “Steel Magnolias.”
In addition to her work on Broadway, Mayes has also made a name for herself in the world of cabaret. She has performed her one-woman show at venues such as Feinstein’s 54 Below and The Metropolitan Room. Her cabaret performances have been praised for their humor, heart, and incredible vocal range. Mayes has also made several appearances on television and in film. She has appeared in shows such as “Law & Order: SVU” and “City of Angels.” She also had a memorable role in the film “Bye Bye Birdie” alongside Ann-Margret and Dick Van Dyke.
Mayes has released five solo albums throughout her career, “The Dorothy Fields Songbook,” “Our Private World: The Comden And Green Songbook,” “The Story Hour,” “Boys And Girls Like You And Me,” and “Valentine.”
In addition to her work as an actress and singer, Mayes is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught master classes at universities and theaters across the country, helping to inspire the next generation of performers. Mayes has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. Sally’s much anticipated nightclub appearances have garnered her rave reviews from coast to coast. She has been nominated for 12 Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs (MAC) awards, and has won two Back Stage Bistro awards for excellence in cabaret and recording.
