• Rock Port Community Garden Club is planning a timber tour Monday, May 7. The party will go to the home of Mrs. Ben B. Gebhards near Lone Cedar schoolhouse and from there to a nearby timber where they will study trees and wildflowers.
• Herbert Townsend, who has been in charge of the elevator at Nishnabotna for the Bentley Grain Co., was transferred this week to the company’s plant at Watson, where he succeeds Louis Bentley. The Nishnabotna elevator is being managed by Dick Bowen.
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre: “South Of Rio” starring Monte Hale, “Holiday In Havana” with Desi Arnaz, “Fuller Brush Girl” with Lucille Ball and Eddie Albert, “Casino To Korea,” and “Outrage.”
• Specials at the Rock Port Market include: U.S. Choice beef roast – blade or arm, 69¢ per pound; chocolate covered cherry candies, 49¢ per box; Peter Pan peanut butter, 12 ounce jar for 35¢; Folgers coffee, 81¢ per pound; and Clorox bleach, 16¢ per quart.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Gone In 60 Seconds” and “The Other Side Of The Mountain.”
• Wesley Christen, city mail carrier at the Rock Port Post Office, will retire Friday, May 7, after 31 years of service. Christen, a Wentworth Military Academy student and an Air Force serviceman during WWII, began as a part-time carrier in 1949.
• A rifle shot that blasted an electrical transformer at the MBPXL plant was discovered April 30. A reward of $10,000 was issued by the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative to find the culprit who ruined the $65,000 transformer.
• Greg Chamberlain, II, 23, was a late filer for the office of Atchison County Sheriff, making a total of nine persons running for the post. Others are: Robert Minderman, Trey Gaines, Deputy Sheriff Deardorff, Alva Stoner, Jack Millsap, Sheriff Paul Seymour, Larry Schlup, and Maurice Flanagan.
• The Rock Port High School home economics department will present a fashion show entitled “200 Years of Fashion.” The show will include fashions of yesterday and today with music provided by the high school music department.

• A couple of Rotarians from Ankara, Turkey, are in town touring sites such as the Nuclear Plant, Vogel Popcorn, Northwest Missouri State University, and Conception Abbey.
• Robert Lee Stanton was presented with an Honorary Doctorate Degree by Northwest Missouri State University. This was only the fourth time the university has presented such a degree.
• This March marked the 20th anniversary of Trans East, Inc. Trans East is a family run trucking business started by Rosa and the late Dale Briggs. The company travels to all points in the United States, but their main routes are in the Midwest and South Texas. The company is currently located on I-29 just off of the Watson exit.
• State Farm is this week’s featured business. Bill Andrews has been with the State Farm Insurance family for 15 years and his office manager is Danyal Fischer.
