• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Night Train To Memphis” starring Roy Acuff and his Smoky Mountain Boys, “Union Station” with Barry Fitzgerald and William Holden, and “Let’s Dance” with Betty Hutton and Fred Astaire.

• A survey at Tarkio College shows that more than three-fourths of the students have part-time jobs, one-third of these students work off campus and two-thirds have jobs on the campus.

• Approximately 350 people attended the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at the Tarkio Community Building Sunday in observance of the third anniversary of the Atchison County organization known as the Nishnabotna Alcoholics Anonymous Group.

• Picnic Day for the grade school will be Wednesday, May 16. Following a picnic lunch at noon, the students will be shown movies at the Tarkio Theatre as guests of Virgil Harbison.

May 13, 1976

• Lester “Taffy” Morton was presented a pin recognizing him for 25 years of faithful service as an official U.S. weather observer. Taffy and his wife, Dorothy, have not only kept the records, they have furnished the statistics daily to radio stations and weekly to the Avalanche newspaper.

• The mercury rose to 78 degrees on the 10th followed by a devastating frost of 31.

• One hundred thirty-two graduates were honored at the 90th commencement ceremony held at Tarkio College May 9. Dr. James I. Brown, Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, gave the commencement address.

• Specials at U Save Mart include: Rhapsody AM & FM digital clock radio with wood grain for $19.95; a Magimatic no-flash-batteries-needed camera with film, three flashcubes, and a photo album for $11.26; and Schick’s hot lather machine for $10.74.

• Mr. and Mrs. Russell Pursell will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, May 23, with a reception in the Fireside Room at the First National Bank in Tarkio.

• Members of Tarkio Girl Scout Troop #50 toured the Tarkio Avalanche newspaper building May 3.

• Major Roger D. Stottlemyre will be the new Colonel of the Missouri Highway Patrol after confirmation this week. He will take over his duties June 1. Stottlemyre was assigned to Troop H, Zone, 1, Tarkio, on February 15, 1975.

• The Tarkio High School boys’ golf team placed second in the district competition to qualify for state. Tarkio’s Derek Hancock placed first and Brad Sparks placed third individually.

• The Tarkio Community Garden Club has started its recognition of “Yards of the Month” for the upcoming summer season. May winners are Martha and Marvin McCartney, Mim St. Clair, Sherry and Mark Caufield, Karen and Paul Lester, Donna and Marvin Smith, Nancy Barrett, Doris Ann and Jack Schmidt, and Davis Funeral Home.

• Verna and Herman Joesting will observe their 60th wedding anniversary May 15.

• The Lady Indian tracksters placed first in the 275 Conference meet. Those placing first included: Beth Pearson in the high jump (5’); Jessica McClain in the 800 meter run (2:38.63); Alex Baruth in the 1600 meter run (5:46.49) and the 3200 meter run (12:55.86 which was also a conference record); Ashely Poptanycz in the shot put (38’4” which was also a conference record) and discus (96’); and the 3200 meter relay (McClain, Nicole Salmond, Emily Salmond, and Baruth) with a time of 11:04.82.
