• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Under Mexicali Stars” with Rex Allen and “The Great Caruso” starring Mario Lanza and Ann Blythe.
• Hilton Griswold of Shenandoah, Iowa, is the new pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio. Rev. Griswold is the “singing evangelist” who conducted a popular series of services here recently and he used to be a pianist with the Blackwood Brothers quartet of radio fame.
• There’s a definite reason why so many people like Squire Ice Cream Co. in Tarkio. In the business for 30 years now, the company has learned most folks demand distinctively delicious Squire Ice Cream because it’s made the way it should be. Take for instance the strawberry ice cream. They don’t use artificial flavor. They use fresh, frozen real strawberries.
• First National Teller Tells: “A visitor a few days ago asked how many different varieties of trees there were here as he had never seen so many trees of so many kinds in one town. We could only answer that back in our active Boy Scout days, we had a contest in which we tagged over 50 varieties.”

• Bill Davis, candidate for Congress, presented an official Bicentennial flag to Tarkio Mayor Roy McIntosh June 9.
• Mrs. Ira Wyrick of Tarkio is spending the Bicentennial summer making a Bicentennial quilt for the commisison and some lucky person who will receive it on Labor Day. The Bicentennial Star design combines the emblem of the Bicentennial year with the star.
• The Atchison County Extension Homemakers Council is sponsoring a cultural art exhibit during the month of July at the Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio.
• At the Tarkio Community Betterment meeting June 14 at the Walnut Inn, Allen-Schiffern Legion Commander Clay Staples discussed the Legion’s Bicentennial Project, the 100 year Tarkio American Legion Time Capsule. This time capsule will be erected on the southwest corner of the grounds.

• A lost pet cockatiel named Larry Bird was returned following an escape during a trip to Vacation Bible School. Garrett Hunkins of Tarkio had been taking the bird with him each day when on Friday, June 8, Larry Bird escaped his cage. Nancy Hurst found the bird on Monday, June 11, at the Tarkio Golf Course and returned him safe and sound to Garrett.
• Atchison County Deputy Sheriff Tyson Gibbons hit a deer while traveling east from Rock Port on Highway 136 in his squad car. The hood of the car came open and the deer landed on top of the engine, but then fell off and was run over by the car. Tyson took a picture of the car following the crash and the image created appears to show an angel lifting off from the hood of the car.
• Tarkio’s own John Currie won the bull riding contest at the Tarkio Rodeo with his performances on Friday and Saturday nights, June 1 and 2.
• The Delmar and Dawn Schebaum residence in Tarkio was named the District IV Yard of the Month winner for June by the Tarkio Garden Club.
