• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Casablanca” with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, “Lullaby of Broadway” with Doris Day and Gene Nelson, and “Lassie In the Painted Hills” with Paul Kelly, Bruce Cowling, and Gary Gray.
• Another week’s precipitation total of 1.25 inches brought the amount of precipitation so far this month to 4.50 inches. Temperatures have ranged between 55 degrees to 89 degrees.
• Members of the Westboro Lions Club will hold a banquet Monday, June 26, in celebration of the club’s third anniversary.
• The Tarkio Avalanche celebrates a birthday, entering its 68th year of publication. During the past years, the newspaper has grown in weight and we hope in service to our many readers and advertisers.
• Temple H. Egbert of Omaha, Nebraska, leased from Everett Cochran of Tarkio the Cochran building on Main Street where the Market Basket was formerly housed and will own and operate a Gamble Store there. Merchandise will include appliances, auto parts and accessories, household utensils, paint, and farm and hand tools.
June 24, 1976
• This past week has been a busy one at the Mule Barn Theatre in Tarkio. On Wednesday, June 16, the theatre opened its Bicentennial celebration, the historical musical “1776.” On Monday, June 21, the theatre opened “Love and Larceny.”
• Marching in Tarkio’s Bicentennial Parade and performing in the North City Park following the parade in July will be the 1st Missouri Volunteers, an all volunteer unit composed of members of the Missouri Air National Guard located at Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph. The 1st Missouri Volunteers have a Colonial Drill Team called “The Governor’s Own” which will be seen in uniforms duplicating those worn by the Virginia Militia under the command of George Washington. Carrying the rifle “Brown Bess,” the drill team will perform the same drill and commands used by the Continental Army.
• Fifty Boy Scouts from Troop 88 (all but two scouts from that troop) are attending camp at Camp Geiger with Scoutmaster Carl F. Martin.
June 21, 2001
• Work continues on the new addition of the Tarkio Elementary School. The space will house a library, computer lab, special services rooms, and offices.
• Mrs. Nan Bone of Shenandoah, Iowa, will be the new elementary principal at Tarkio R-I in the fall.
• Work on the new bathrooms at Niedermeyer Park in Tarkio is nearing completion. On Saturday, June 16, work began on connecting the sewer and water lines along with the electricity to the new bathrooms located on the south side of the park.
• “Son Creek Junction” was the theme for the combined vacation Bible school of St. John’s Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Fifty-five children and 21 helpers took part.
• Fifty people volunteered to donate blood on Monday, June 18, at the Community Blood Drive in Tarkio. Forty-four units were given and there were 10 first-time donors.
