• Effective with the close of business on Saturday, June 30, 1951, the Rock Port office of the Railway Express Agency, Inc. will be closed. Such action is deemed necessary by the management of the express company because of a marked decrease in traffic and the expense of maintaining service into Rock Port.
• Atchison County is going to have a special election on Tuesday, July 10, to elect a state-representative to fill the unexpired term of the late Dr. J.A. Gray, Republican, who died suddenly in Jefferson City while serving in the state legislature.
• Some 65 or more Cub Scouts, their parents and friends gathered at the city park Tuesday for a picnic. The evening was favorable for an outdoor outing, contrary to so many rainy days of late.
• Miss Peggy Luhrs, Rock Port High School junior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Luhrs, left early this week for Fulton, Missouri, to attend Girls’ State as representative of the Rock Port Legion Auxiliary.
• Clayton W. Allen, Rock Port attorney, has purchased the Atchison County Independent from H.S. Hudson, administrator of the estate of the late Dr. J.A. Gray. The paper is usually referred to as the Watson Independent. Mrs. Evelyn DeVore, teacher in the Watson schools, will serve as editor.

• Conservation Agent Richard W. Sperber reported to the ‘Mail’ this week that the Langdon Bend Access with boat ramp, toilets and restrooms have been completed as well as the Hoot Owl Bend Access which has parking and restrooms but no boat ramp.
• Senator Hardin “Hardy” Cox (D-Rock Port) attended the signing of SB 875 in Jefferson City, June 23. The bill, which he guided through the legislature, will aid senior citizens and the handicapped with bus transportation.
• The Rock Port Rotary Club is trying to raise money through the Rock Port community for tennis courts.
• Winds up to 60 mph resulted in fallen tree branches and building damage around the county. One barn near Watson and one near Westboro were destroyed in the high winds.

• Wallace Carpenter, M.D., is happy to announce that Aron Burke, M.D., and Joanna Burke, P.N.P., are joining the Tarkio Family Practice and Family Medical Center in Rock Port.
• Kalen Smith attended the West Point Invitational Academic Workshop June 10-15 on the Academy’s campus in Newburgh, New York. He was one of 409 high school juniors from around the country that attended. At closing ceremonies, he was named one of the top 10 candidates, based on the week’s activities, which included physical training, academic sessions and intramural sports.
• A meeting was held June 25 at Rock Port City Hall to discuss the preservation of the movie theater. Leading the meeting was Dr. Gary Powell with around 20 concerned citizens. Judy Holliman, from the Hamburg Colonial Theater, was there to give some insight of how they established their theater.
• A very small but delighted group of children and parents watched an engaging performance of Frizby’s Reading Road Trip given by Amy Smith and Scott Sears of the Chicago-based educational theatre called the Time Step Players. The program was sponsored by the Atchison County Library to kick off their Summer Reading Program.
