July 6, 1951

• Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Lindsay moved last Thursday to Collins Hall at Tarkio College and will be in charge of the boys’ dormitory. They will also have charge of the snack bar and book store on campus, assisted by the students. In addition, Mr. Lindsay will continue with his duties as college engineer.

• Shooters from Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa are expected at the Tarkio Gun Club grounds east of Tarkio Sunday for a registered shoot.

• Leo F. Carey has moved his Tarkio Motor Parts wholesale supply business from the Cooper building into the newly-redecorated quarters below the Walnut Inn. Mrs. Henry Hargus is the bookkeeper of the Tarkio Motor Parts.

• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Pagan Love Song” starring Esther Williams and Howard Keel, “Father’s Little Dividend” with Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Joan Bennett, “Sea Wolf,” and “The Great Missouri Raid” with Wendell Corey and Ellen Drew.

July 8, 1976

• The 1976 Missouri State High School Championship Rodeo Finals proved to be the largest in the 21 year history of the event. One hundred and thirty-four of the Missouri State High School Rodeo Association’s 167 members traveled to the Tarkio Rodeo Grounds to compete. An estimated crowd of over 5,000 people attended the three nightly performances. All-Around Cowboy honors went to Mark Kreder of St. Peters. Debbie Powell of Maitland was the All-Around Cowgirl.

• “America,” judged the best Bicentennial song in a contest sponsored by the Saturday Evening Post  in its National Award Anthem for the Bicentennial, was performed by Janett Adams at the Fourth of July celebration at the Tarkio North City Park Sunday. After her performance, the composer of the song, Frances McPherson Stewart of Tyrone, Pennsylvania, was introduced. She is the sister of Jean Enos of Tarkio and a former Tarkio resident.

• Dr. J.M. Davis, 88 years old, died at his home in Tarkio Saturday. He was one of the oldest practicing physicians in this section of the state and had followed his profession for 66 years. He began his practice in western Kansas, was a physician in Craig for 40 years, and then came to Tarkio in 1935.

• With a purchase of any Admiral refrigerator at Gilstrap Tarkio Electric, the buyer will receive $35 worth of groceries. Twenty dollars worth of free groceries will be given with the purchase of any other models in stock.

• A surprise birthday party was held June 29 for Mrs. Sidney Cooper by the Tarkio Elementary Bicentennial Chorus. The students presented her with an engraved pewter plate. Mrs. Jagger, the accompanist, was presented a lovely pair of earrings.

• Rachelle Brown is the new beauty operator at Sharlyn’s Beauty Den in Tarkio. She is a recent graduate of Vatterott School of Cosmetology in St. Joseph, Missouri.

• Toni Jones, a Northview Manor resident in Tarkio, was one of 15 contestants honored at the Ms. Nursing Home Pageant at the Ramada Inn in St. Joseph June 21, 2001. Toni was named second runner-up.

• Funds for the new resource center in Tarkio are still coming in. The most recent update shows a total of $86,238.53.
