James Michael “Mike” Hunkins, 79, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on June 19, 2026, in Las Vegas at Nathan Adelson Hospice.

Mike was born in Hamburg, Iowa, to James S. and Nadine Riley Hunkins on August 25, 1946. He went to school K-12 in Tarkio, Missouri. He served in the Army from October of 1964 until January of 1967. He served overseas in both Germany and Okinawa, Japan. He attended Iowa Western Community College for one semester after military service. He married Nancee L. Haas on May 20, 1972, in Chillicothe, Missouri. He worked as a machinist for Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowa, for 41 years. He was a councilman on the Tarkio City Council in charge of the city parks, including the municipal pool, for 18 years during which he was the Mayor Pro Tem for 12 of those years. He was also a beloved baseball coach to numerous kids across multiple seasons.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Nadine Hunkins. He is survived by his wife, Nancee, of the home; son, David (Gela) Hunkins, Las Vegas; siblings, Rebecca Hunkins, Liberty, Missouri, S. Edward (Janice) Hunkins, Tarkio, and Sherry (Phillip) Pfaltzgraff, Oregon City, Oregon; and grandchildren, Cody Hunkins, Kaylee Hunkins, Camryn Hunkins, Colton Hunkins, and Dieszel Cameron, all of Las Vegas.

A funeral service will be held at Palm Mortuary – Northwest, 6701 North Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, on July 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a committal service at the mortuary at noon.
