• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Meet The Killers” starring Abbott and Costello, “Capt. Carey U.S.A.” with Allan Ladd and Wanda Hendrix, “Excuse My Dust” with Red Skelton and Sally Forrest, and “Born Yesterday” with Judy Halliday.

• Lyneth Wells, Tarkio Police Officer, received a 50 dollar reward for the apprehension of an escaped convict found walking the streets of Tarkio Tuesday evening. The man had served two years of a 10 year sentence for forgery when he escaped from the penitentiary in Fort Madison, Iowa, June 30.

• Specials at the Supply Food Store include: Golden Wedding coffee, 79¢ per can; Charmin toilet tissue, 4 rolls for 33¢; bacon squares, 29¢ per pound; fresh peaches, 3 pounds for 25¢; cocoanut bars, 7 ounces for 15¢; and Libby’s pickles, a pint for 45¢.

July 15, 1976

• Funeral services were held Saturday, July 10, for Virgil A. Clement, 62. Virgil lived in Westboro for all of his life, except for two years spent in Idaho and California. He served as mayor for several years, served in the fire department, and worked at Tucker Funeral Home, driving an ambulance, and also drove a school bus. He was a painter and also worked in the cafe and grocery store business.

• The Mule Barn Theatre is hosting an antique auction and flea market July 17 with auctioneer Jesse McIntyre of Shenandoah leading the sales. Some of the items listed for auction include an antique cash register, a set of work of Shakespeare circa 1887, church pews, and costumes and props from the theatre. The money will be used for air-conditioning the lobby and offices and the construction of public restrooms.

• An impressive sight in Tarkio this week was the caravan of 75 Airstream campers which pulled into Tarkio Monday for a two day rest. This expedition, called the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, is following the Lewis and Clark Trail after attending a convention of some 4,487 Airstreams and a total of 13,000 people in Louisville, Kentucky. They will end up traveling 3,000 miles to Lacey, Washington.

• Some Bicentennial Celebration winners from the events held July 3 and 4 in Tarkio include: Skillet Throw – Marge Postlewait; Frog Jump – Kevin Sands and his frog; Turtle Race – Mike Jones and his turtle; Sack Race – Sharon Harris; and Arm Wrestling – Todd McIntyre in the elementary bracket, Jamey Cohn in the teen bracket, and Brian Criswell in the adult bracket.

• The annual Men’s Best Shot Golf Tournament was held Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8, at the Tarkio Golf Course. In the championship flight, Losson and Hornaday placed 1st with 136, Summa and Summa with 2nd and 137, Simon and McNeely in third with 137, Herrick and Kenagy in 4th with 139, and Loch and Kline in 5th with 139.

• Tarkio High School senior Chad Weber attended Boys State at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. Chad was one of 961 participants.

• The Tarkio Community Garden Club announced Yards of the Months: District 1 – Alan and Debbie Volker; District II – Martin and Becky Schomburg; District III – Mark and Sherry Caufield; District IV – Phyllis Jackson; District V – Jesse and Deloris Reeves; District VI – Rosalie Woodring; District VII – Marnie Shaum; and Special Award – Tarkio City Hall.
