July 27, 1951
• The local firemen made up for lost time Tuesday evening by holding an initiation of public officials. Chief Loomis and his fellow firemen took the fire truck and visited a half dozen citizens, including Mayor J.J. Wright, who all got an unexpected “bath” fully clothed and in public view. All took it good naturedly.
• One of Atchison County’s oldest citizens passed to his reward when John Henry “Bud” Stanton died at the home of one of his daughters. Bud was born January 21, 1860, near Greeneville, Tennessee, and settled in Atchison County many years ago.
• The National Federation of Music Clubs has announced that its new scholarship in audience education for study at Chautauqua has been awarded to Miss Joanne Curnutt of Rock Port. Starting in the fall, she will teach piano and organ at Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton, Texas, and will conduct two regular radio programs on music appreciation.
• Richard E. Waddell of Rock Port passed away July 23. He had been a railroad man for 54 years. He took his first job at braking and retired as a conductor. One of his memorable experiences was when riding in Indian Territory on his way to Texas, the train was held up by robbers.

• Paula Mullins, daughter of Mrs. Ned Greenley of Rock Port, will be competing for the title of Miss APHA in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the National Paint Horse Show.
• The nutrition program in Tarkio is expanding to the Community Room of the Fair Oaks Senior Citizens housing units in Rock Port. The meals will be prepared in Tarkio and transported to Fair Oaks every Tuesday and Thursday beginning August 5.
• The Northwest Missouri District Men’s Slow Pitch Softball Tournament, held at the Rock Port City Park, ended July 25 with Tarkio Hy-Vee taking first over Westboro Lutheran Mutual, 3-2.
• Former judges H.P. “Jack” Savage and Ray Richards, both of Rock Port, celebrated their 88th birthdays in July. During his 16 years as judge, Savage married 2,600 couples. During Richards’ 26 years as presiding judge, he signed the bonds for the Brownville Bridge.
• The undefeated Rock Port girls’ traveling softball team won over teams from Barnard, Tarkio, Hopkins, Clearmont, Conception Junction, and the Rock Port home champion team. The girls finished their season July 12, having scored 71 points to their opponents’ 21.

• McDonald’s named Linda Farrell as the June Employee of the Month and Ryan Sundermann as July Employee of the Month.
• Danielle Carlson and Stephanie Burge of Rock Port participated in the Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleader Day.
• Todd and Crystal Herron of Rock Port donated a gliding rocker to Community Hospital Fairfax’s nursery in memory of their son, Clayton Mathhias.
• Pleasant View Nursing Home Administrator Patty Steinberg was the winner of Administrator of the Year for District II. She and the six other district winners will be honored at a banquet in Tan-Tar-A August 27.
• Jerry Moore presented a check for $1,082.75 to Amie Schleicher for the Atchison County Extension Center’s Don Mobley Show Arena. The money was raised at the Citizens Bank & Trust golf day.
