The Atchison County Library Tarkio Branch has a new display for people to enjoy: a unique collection of wood carvings donated for the display by Anne Amthor. Her uncle, Harold Fields, was an accomplished artist and woodcarver. In a 1986 article of the Maryville Daily Forum, Harold called his talent “just a hobby,” but anyone who visits the display of his work will know that his hobby reached far beyond. The article went on to describe his bird carvings as “so lifelike you expect them to take off in flight at any minute.” Harold said in the article that his abilities at carving were self taught, explaining that he would first study a bird in the encyclopedia, then started planning, sketching, carving, whittling, sandpapering, and finally, painting the pieces. His collection was once on display in the Heritage Collection Room at the Maryville Public Library.

People who are familiar with Maryville from that time will recall Harold as the co-owner of the well-known Field’s Clothing, located on the square. To Anne, he was her favorite uncle, her father, Richard’s, twin and her favorite babysitter. He was also a Coast Guard veteran.

Anne says her favorite carving is a really tall sculpture with two birds. She shared that the brothers were avid hunters, which inspired the quails and other waterfowl in the collection.
