• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Silver City Bonanza,” “Angels With Dirty Faces” with James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, Humphrey Bogart, and Ann Sheridan, “The Sea Hawk” with Errol Flynn, “The Frogmen” with Richard Widmark, Dana Andrews, and Gary Merrill, and “The Sword of Monte Cristo” starring George Montgomery and Paula Corday.
• An inoculation clinic for prevention of typhoid fever began Wednesday at Nishnabotna and will continue until the work is complete. Although there are no typhoid cases at Nishnabotna, the drinking water has been subjected to contamination because of the excessive rains and therefore the clinic is being carried on as a routine procedure.
• To date this year, Tarkio has had 30.2 inches precipitation with 4.82 of that amount having occurred during the month of July. Temperatures ranged between a high of 94 degrees on last Friday and a low of 58 degrees on Wednesday, August 1.
• Rev. and Mrs. Hilton Griswold and children, Barbara and Larry, of Shenandoah, Iowa, moved last week to Tarkio where Rev. Griswold has begun his duties as pastor of the local Assembly of God Church. The family is occupying the church parsonage at 2nd and Elm streets.
August 5, 1976
• The garage at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ed Straub on North Third Street was completely destroyed by fire Sunday morning.
• The Tarkio College Women’s Softball Team ended their last road trip with an 11-5 record to end the summer season. Two outstanding accomplishments of the summer season were placing 8th out of 32 in the Jack Wright Invitational Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, and 5th out of 25 in a Houston, Texas, tournament.
• A group of Atchison County 4-Hers gathered at the Donald LaHue farm last week to learn how to groom their animals to help earn that grand champion ribbon at the fair. The teacher was Byron Million, a former 4-H father and leader.
• Around 30 residents at Northview Manor in Tarkio have been enjoying the singalongs held at the nursing home. Residents join in singing “oldies but goodies.” Sandra Freeman has volunteered her time and talent to making this event a big success.
August 2, 2001
• Ruth Blacketer was honored for 16 years of being a “tried and true” fan of the 11 and Under Continental Amateur Baseball Association (C.A.B.A.) World Series in Tarkio and the surrounding area. Ruth has always been one of the first people to purchase a season ticket to the games and has attended nearly all the games played in Tarkio over the past 16 years.
• Patty Nelson, owner of Unicorns & Dragons in Tarkio, presented a style show July 26 for the residents of Northview Manor in Tarkio. The residents enjoyed seeing costumes from the Renaissance to pioneer times, Puritan and Victorian ages, Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and the Orient.
• Ask Elsie Fae: “Lightning struck Jerene Rolf’s home and knocked her chimney to the ground. Poor Jerene! Santa Claus will not be able to visit her this year.”
• United States President George W. Bush announced his intention to nominate Todd P. Graves to be United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. Graves, 35, is a 1984 graduate of Tarkio High School.
