August 3, 1951

• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “The Kid from Texas” starring Audie Murphy and Gale Storm and “Kim” with Errol Flynn and Dean Stockwell.

• Clarence Umbarger has sold his 240-acre farm four miles southwest of Fairfax to Fred Martin of Tarkio. The farm is a very productive one and has two sets of improvements. The consideration was $56,000, which is $233.33 per acre.

• Melvin Brothers have sold their service station and Firestone store in Fairfax and their service station in Craig to Wilbur Heitman, a farmer of near Corning. The Melvins did not sell the buildings, only the inventory, and Mr. Heitman has taken a lease on the locations.

• M.H. Windhorst found a large plastic balloon in his hog lot last Friday. A printed note on the balloon stated that it had been sent up by General Mills Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Minneapolis and was flown as part of a high altitude weather study. Mr. Windhorst called the company that morning to report where and when it was found.

August 5, 1976

• Andy Anderson, public relations representative for KMA Radio in Shenandoah, Iowa, presented a humorous talk at Tuesday’s Kiwanis Club luncheon at the Christian Church.

• Congressman Jerry Litton of Chillicothe, Missouri, his wife, Sharon, and their two children, Linda, 13, and Scott, 12, died Tuesday night when their plane crashed on take-off at a Chillicothe airport. The Litton family was on their way to Kansas City to a news conference and party after Litton’s upset victory Tuesday over Warren Hearnes and James Symington in the Senate primary election. The pilot of the plane, Paul Rupp, Jr., and his son, Paul Rupp, III, 18, also died. Litton had just made a trip to Fairfax on July 3 where he spoke to about 150 people who had gathered at the football field.

• J. Hayden Pyeatt of Fairfax was recognized at the annual vocational agricultural conference in Columbia, during the awards and recognition banquet. He received an Accutron watch for his 30 years of teaching in the ag field.

August 2, 2001

• Ask Elsie Fae: “Saturday before the Rock Port parade, Jack Vernon chauffeured me around in a golf cart. The fact that the streets were packed with people, vehicles, and horses did not slow him down. Outside of hanging on for dear life as we rounded corners, my most exciting moment came when we reached a speed of 45 miles per hour while backing up a crowded street. Fortunately, everyone in the county knows Jack and they got out of the way. I think in the old days he was called ‘Wild Jack Vernon’ and the name still fits.”

• The Community Hospital Gift Shop encourages everyone to stop by and see the variety of gift ideas, cards, and household items available for purchase. The gift shop was started in 1970.

• Fairfax High School senior Katy Hunter recently participated in a summer basketball camp at the University of Missouri – Columbia. Katy won 1st place in the camp free-throw shooting contest and 2nd place in the three-point shooting contest. She was also part of the team that won the camp championship.

• Gloria Bolton of Fairfax was the guest of honor at a dinner hosted by the Atchison County Library. Gloria was honored for 16 years as a library trustee.
