• In celebration of their 10th anniversary, Gildersleeve & Simon in Rock Port are offering customers the chance to win a Knapp Monarch power mixer, a Betty Crocker iron and steam attachment, and a Telechron electric clock.
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Sundowners” with Robert Preston and Chill Wills, “In Old Missouri,” and “Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man.”
• Contractors hope to start operations next Monday of water main extensions in the north part of Rock Port. Much of the new line will run along the right-of-way of Highway No. 275. Four and six-inch pipe will be used in construction of the main, with several of the latest type fire hydrants installed at strategic points.
• Mrs. Jay Lytle was in The Mail office Wednesday to renew a subscription for her son, Pvt. Duane E. Lytle. She reported that he had left the states on July 13 and is now at Bremmershaven, Germany. He crossed on the U.S.S. Butler.
August 5, 1976
• Women of the Templeton township met 40 years ago in the Phelps City church and organized the Templeton Homemakers Club. “Healthier, Happier Homes” is the club motto.
• At the Atchison County Co-Op landfill (which is used to bury empty chemical cans), a fire released toxic gases and a great amount of heat and smoke July 30. Rock Port volunteer firemen used about 2,500 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.
• A panel concession truck broke loose from the vehicle that was pulling it and the truck ran into the Ed McKenney home July 27. It caused extensive damage to the southeast corner of the house, located on U.S. 136 west.
• Richard W. Foster, manager of Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative, Rock Port, has been elected to the board of directors of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association in Washington, D.C. He will represent the rural electric cooperatives of Missouri in the national association’s policy and decision-making processes.

• Jeanne Garst of Watson recently submitted a photo of her grandson, Trey Garst, holding his puppy Toby, to Friendship Ideals 2001 Magazine. The magazine chose the photo for publication in its volume 58, No. 4 issue. The puppy was rescued by the Garst family after he was abandoned.
• Tyler Ward participated in the bowling competition at the 17th annual Show-Me-State games held in Columbia July 21. He started the day by bowling in the youth singles and finished the day bowling in parent-child doubles with his father, Ron Ward.
• Winners of the Atchison County Fair Parade are: grand prize – Cub Scouts; business and organization – Farm Service Agency; tractor division – Lynn Buttercase; church division – United Methodist Church; autos 1950 to new – Dodge Cornet; and children – Cub Scouts.
• The Rock Port High School summer weight lifting program ended with the annual lift-off Friday night. Brent Dahlin ended with a hang clean of 290 pounds to put him second in the record books. He also squatted 445 pounds, putting him third of all time. Nick Gray set a new pound for pound record by squatting 465 pounds while only weighing 173 pounds. That lift gave him a total of 2.688 pounds of weight lifted for every pound of body weight. His 465 also put him second on the gross pounds list.
