Muhammad Ali loved to say he was “the greatest.” His confidence was legendary, and so were his fights. None was more famous than the 1975 “Thrilla in Manila,” where Ali and Joe Frazier pushed themselves to the very edge of human endurance. It was not talent alone that made the fight unforgettable. It was their grit, their refusal to quit.

That same determination appears in one of the Bible’s most remarkable stories. In Genesis 32, Jacob spends the night wrestling with a mysterious man by the Jabbok River. Wounded and exhausted, he refuses to let go, declaring, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” By dawn, Jacob leaves with a limp, a new name – Israel – and a blessing that changes his life forever. Jacob’s greatest victory was not defeating an opponent. It was his refusal to surrender.

Most of us will never step into a boxing ring, but we wrestle with nearly overwhelming challenges every day. We wrestle to keep a marriage strong, to raise children with patience, to discover our calling, to overcome temptation, and to remain faithful when life hurts. The temptation is always to give up. However, Scripture urges us to hold on.

Jesus showed us what that kind of perseverance looks like. He did not turn away from the cross, even when He knew suffering lay before Him. Through His faithful endurance came forgiveness, new life, and hope for the world.

The Christian life is not about avoiding struggle but trusting God through it. Like Jacob, we may leave the battle with a limp, but we also leave with God’s blessing.

So, when the night feels long, do not let go. Keep wrestling. Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep faith the dawn is coming and God still blesses those who cling to Him.
