• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Winchester” with James Stewart, Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea, and Stephen McNally.
• Thomas Lynn, 84, a former resident of Tarkio, passed away in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, July 31. Thomas was born near St. Thomas in Ontario, Canada, and he came to Atchison County with his family in 1868. His father had some hundreds of acres of prairie land here and this farmstead home was named Tarkio Nurseries when Thomas’ father, Robert, added the tree business. Thomas was a member of the second graduating class of Tarkio College in 1888 (a class of two).
• Arthur Geist, Tarkio contractor, last week completed construction of a new cafe building at Westboro for Pleas Owens.
• Patsy “Butch” Britton had her 17th birthday Tuesday and is now eligible to receive her private pilot’s license. She already had some 50 flying hours to her credit and has made quite a name for herself as “that kid pilot.”
August 12, 1976
• Mrs. Mary Lindsay, vice-president of the First National Bank of Tarkio, presented Avalanche publisher Annette Secor with a brick from the old Robidoux Hotel in St. Joseph, Missouri. The hotel was demolished to make room for the American National Bank.
• The weather this week has hit both high and low extremes. The low was 53 degrees on August 7 and the high was 92 degrees on August 9.
• Just a few weeks ago, it was vacant at the corner of U.S. 136 and 2nd Street in Tarkio. Now, it is a fire station.

• New yard signs are springing up all over Atchison County. The signs feature the new 911 addresses for rural route residents in the county.
• The Muleskinner’s Saloon has opened in the historic Walnut Inn on Main Street in Tarkio. Jared Erickson of Maryville, Missouri, is managing the new saloon. He is being assisted by Josh Erickson, Melinda Watkins, and Brock Nuckolls, all of Maryville, and Rosanna McAdams of Tarkio, who is serving as cook.
• The Florida Mudcats defeated the Tulsa Stars 14-11 to win the C.A.B.A. 11 and Under World Series Championship in Tarkio. Individual awards were presented to several players, including Florida Mudcats’ hitter Eric Hosmer (a Golden Glove recipient and World Series champion with the Kansas City Royals), who was named the Most Valuable Hitter, with 16 of 27 hits, earning a batting average of .593, recording 18 RBIs, and two home runs.
• The Tarkio Community Garden Club announced August Yards of the Month: Pam and Mac Rightsell, 400 Spruce; Thelma and Jim Woolsey, 1211 McNary; Janice and Ed Hunkins, 904 Park; Dallas and Jayson Prather, 408 Broad; Cindy and Gerald Collingham, 701 Elm; Craig McAdams, 605 Pine; Bonnie and Donald Whited, 1300 Pine; and the Special Award went to Atchison County Health Center on Main Street.
• Michael Lundy, the World of Work Coordinator at Tarkio Academy, received one of 10 Honorable Mention awards at the John Steinbeck Short Story Competition at the National John Steinbeck Writing Festival in Salinas, California. Mr. Lundy’s short story is entitled, “Vida’s Garden.”
