• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “At War With The Army” starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.
• The resignation of Mayor Fred R. McMahon was accepted at a meeting of the Fairfax Board of Aldermen Tuesday night. James K. Hunter has been chairman since its reorganization in April, so he was declared mayor and took the oath of office.
• Billy Ryan, small son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ryan of Tarkio, was able to leave the Fairfax Community Hospital Wednesday, August 1, after being a patient since July 4. Billy fell in the yard of his home and broke his leg between the knee and hip. It was necessary for Billy to lay with his legs in traction, suspended above his head for most of the time spent in the hospital.
• Ninety-degree or warmer temperatures every day so far of the present week has marked the week the warmest of the summer. A one-inch rain Thursday night of last week benefitted corn and other crops.

• Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shaw of Fairfax announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Roxanne, to Galen E. Southard, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Galen Southard of Tarkio. The bride-elect is a graduate of Fairfax High School and Baptist Memorial Hospital. She’s employed as an LPN at Pleasant View. Galen is a Tarkio High School graduate and is engaged in farming and carpentry work. A November wedding is planned.
• The Atchison County commemorative pewter plates being sold by the Fairfax Bicentennial Commission have arrived. About 110 of the 175 limited edition plates have already been sold. County landmarks, drawn by Fairfax artist Bob Smith, are featured on the plates.
• Yocum Fertilizer Inc. took possession Friday of the former Mutz Oil Co. station in downtown Fairfax.
• Seventy-five Atchison County 4-H members and their families attended the first Atchison County 4-H picnic in the Rock Port City Park August 4.
• At least two Atchison County fishermen have qualified for the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Master Angler Club. Joe Ed Straub of Tarkio made the list with a largemouth bass weighing 8 pounds, 12 ounces. Ted Harmon of Rock Port caught a 1 pound, 6 ounce bluegill to join the group.

• Three farms were recognized as Atchison County Missouri Century Farms. One of them was the Elmer Cottle Farm, Fairfax, which was represented by Elmer L. Cottle and daughter, Phyllis Ann Carmichael, Pickering, Missouri. Phyllis Carmichael’s great-grandparents, Joshua W. and Rachel A. Hunt Stevenson, bought the farm in 1878.
• Reggie Koop of Koop’s Karpentry recently built and donated an oak glass curio cabinet to the Fairfax Kiwanis Club to give away during the Fairfax Fair.
• The annual Fairfax Fair will be held August 17-19. This year’s theme is “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.”
• Candidates for the Fairfax Fair Miss Fairfax contest are: Jessica Wiley, Megan O’Riley, Beth Graves, Jaymee Chastain, Courtney Sinkhorn, Stephanie Sinkhorn, Katy Hunter, Briana Umbarger, Emily Seymour, Crystal Beck, Amanda Morton, Jessica Koop, and Jamie Whittington. Junior Miss Fairfax contestants are Tayne Thompson, Kaylyn Sly, Chelsie Bright, and Shelby Zirfas.
