Marlin Roy Gubser, 76, of Rock Port, Missouri, passed away on July 29, 2026, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Marlin was born on May 3, 1950, to Leroy and Elsie (Werner) Gubser. As the second of twin boys, he was raised on the family farm, a place he was proud to call home throughout his life.

After graduating from Hamburg High School, Marlin proudly served his country in the United States Army with the Second Armored Division, Hell on Wheels. After returning home from the Army, he married Sherry Thompson on July 6, 1973. Together they shared 53 years of marriage, raising their family on the farm they loved. Farming was Marlin’s life’s work, and he was proud to continue the tradition that had shaped him since childhood.

His family will remember him as a hardworking man who taught them not only how to work the land, but how to love it. He led by example, showing the importance of faith, family, a strong work ethic, and finding joy in life’s simple moments. Whether he was driving his John Deere through the fields, planting pumpkins, or simply visiting with family and friends, he had a way of making ordinary days memorable.

Marlin’s faith was the foundation of his life. He enjoyed Bible studies with the Navigators and treasured spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed camping, boating, mushroom hunting, woodworking, playing cards, and making memories on family vacations.

Marlin often joked that he had to explain whether he was from Hamburg, Iowa, or Rock Port, Missouri. Although his mailing address was Hamburg, Iowa, for half of his life, he never actually lived in Iowa. He attended Sunny Slope Country School in Missouri before graduating from Hamburg High School. He participated in FFA and enjoyed being a member of the Northern Highlighters 4-H Club of Atchison County.

Marlin leaves behind a family who loved him dearly: his wife, Sherry; his children, Lora Lea (Randy) Owen, Patricia (Jonathan) Limpert, and Travis (Mindy) Gubser; his grandchildren, Connor Owen, Cameron Owen – always loved and forever remembered – Piper Limpert, Shea Limpert, Mason Gubser, and Elsie Gubser; his sister, Cheryl (Larry) Newhouse; his brother, Marvin (Jeanne) Gubser; his stepbrothers, Wyatt (Mary Ann) Hock and Keith (Gail) Hock; his stepsister, Brenda (Jay) Bohenblust; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Some of Marlin’s greatest joys came from simply being with the people he loved. Whether it was family vacations, camping, playing cards around the table, visiting with cousins, or traveling with friends, he treasured every opportunity to spend time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed the many adventures he shared with Connie and Arthur, Paul and Cheri, David and Kay, and Danny and Rebecca. Those friendships, along with the love of his family, filled his life with laughter and countless treasured memories.

A funeral service was held Saturday, August 1, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Westboro, Missouri. Burial followed at Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hamburg Fire and Rescue, Cameron Owen Memorial 4H Scholarship, or St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro.
