• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Bagdad” starring Maureen O’Hara, Paul Christian, and Vincent Price and “Tarzan and The Amazons” with Johnny Weissmuller.
• George Traub exhibited a branch from one of his trees, fruit-laden as usual, to the Avalanche. On the single branch were counted 27 large plums.
• A series of figurines inspired by characters of the Mrs. Beatrice Potter books has been purchased for display at the Atchison County Library and Tarkio branch. The figurines, English importations, include Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and other of the Potter characters.
• Master Sgt. Howard C. Wurst of Lake City, Minnesota, a former Tarkio College student, is the recipient of the Silver Star medal for gallantry in action. Wurst and his platoon were digging in on a hill in Korea, preparing for the night, when five mortar rounds came in on them. After returning fire, Wurst, who had been repeatedly exposing himself to check the platoon’s position, noticed a group of the enemy silhouetted against the sky. They had overrun his machine gun position. He immediately charged forward, throwing hand grenades into the midst of the enemy, who eventually retreated.
• A storm of the flash flood type with high winds and strong gusts here Sunday night uprooted many trees and caused extensive damage to telephone lines, resulting in a complete lack of telephone service for most of the users in Tarkio this week.
August 19, 1976
• Super savings at Hy-Vee include: Wilson certified franks, 12 ounce package for 49¢; Bondware white paper plates, 100 count for 69¢; Hy-Vee golden stick margarine, 1 pound package for 29¢; and t-bone steaks, $1.69 per pound.
• A tour of farm irrigation systems has been set for this area. Three different irrigation systems will be seen in the tour – a central pivot system, a gated pipe system, and a traveling big gun system.
• Trooper and Mrs. Roger Stottlemyer of Tarkio are happy to announce the birth of a daughter, Tanya Dawn, at the Fairfax hospital on August 8.
• Mary Anola Ball has been chosen as Northview Manor’s “Resident of the Month.” Northview Manor will be choosing a “Resident of the Month” for the next five months and these names will be submitted to the home office to be entered in the “Resident of the Year” contest among the 22 nursing homes.

• Ask Elsie Fae: “Jane Close had a beautiful party for her mother’s 90th birthday. Mary Burns looked lovely in pink – ‘to know her is to love her.’ Thelma Woolsey threw a party for Arlene Wheeler’s 92nd birthday this summer. Arlene is the best-known woman in Tarkio and women and men alike find her good nature irresistible. Opal Flowers, looking and acting like she’s no more than 65, celebrated her 96th birthday. Opal is truly a jewel.”
• Westboro “Yard of the Month” winners for August are Karen Martin on the east side and Maurice K. and Pat Martin on the west side.
• Tarkio R-I Schools will open the doors to students Wednesday, August 29, one week later than previously planned due to construction delays on the new addition to the elementary school.
• The sixth annual Friendship Day will be held Wednesday, August 22. This year’s theme is “Make Someone Smile.”
