Tarkio R-I will hold an open house Thursday, August 20, for Tarkio R-I students. The elementary open house will be held from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Sixth grade orientation will be held from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the high school and the high school open house will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The East Atchison and Rock Port fall sports seasons begin this week. The Lady Blue Jays volleyball team will hold a scrimmage on Thursday, August 20, at 6:00 p.m. at Rock Port High School. The Blue Jays football team will travel to Tabor, Iowa, to participate in a football jamboree at 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 21. The East Atchison Wolves football team will host the EA Jamboree Friday, August 21, at 6:00 p.m. at M. David Palmeiro Stadium in Tarkio. The East Atchison Lady Wolves volleyball team will host Nodaway Valley and Hamburg in the EA Jamboree at the TAC at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 25.

The 60th annual Fairfax Fair begins Friday, August 21. This annual event is sponsored by the Fairfax Optimist Club and will be a great time for family and friends to get together and “Celebrate America!” Check out the schedule of events on page 10.

Rock Port R-II students and families are invited to a Welcome Back-to-School Picnic sponsored by Midwest Data Center. It will be held Friday, August 21, from 5:00 to 6:15 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Meet Your Teacher Night will also take place that night. Elementary students (K-5) may meet their teachers from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. An orientation for sixth and seventh graders and new students will be held in the south gym from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. that night.

The First Lutheran Church in Rock Port will host a blessing of teachers and backpacks during the morning service Sunday, August 23, starting at 10:30 a.m. A meal will be provided following the service. See their ad on page 4 for more information.

Classes for the 2025-26 school year will begin next week at all three Atchison County schools. Tarkio R-I students will return to school Monday, August 24, and classes will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. that day. The new school year at Rock Port R-II begins Tuesday, August 25, with a full day of classes (7:50 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for high school and 8:00 a.m.-3:40 p.m. for elementary). The first day of school for Fairfax R-3 students will be Wednesday, August 26, with classes starting at 7:55 a.m. and dismissing that day at 12:08 p.m. (both breakfast and lunch will be served). The Graves-Chapple Field Day will be held Tuesday morning, August 25, at the research farm on the outer road near Corning, Missouri. The event, which is free and open to the public, will showcase research and technological improvements.

Fairfax R-3 School will have a Back-To-School Open House and Carnival Tuesday, August 25, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Families can enjoy games, popcorn, and free Kool Kats, and a balloon artist will create fun balloon animals for the kids. Families are invited to visit classrooms, meet teachers, and drop off school supplies. This will also be an opportunity for junior high and high school students to pick up class schedules, receive locker assignments, drop off school supplies, and meet teachers.
