• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “For Savage Raiders,” “There’s A Girl In My Heart,” “Appointment With Danger” starring Alan Ladd and Jan Sterling, and “Smugglers Island” with Jeff Chandler and Evelyn Keyes.
• The Hiway Cafe had its formal opening this week on Thursday morning under new management with Mrs. Ruth Dragoo and Miss Cassie Porter from Tarkio in charge. A new, three-sided counter with chromium stools, as well as a number of modernistic tables and chairs have been installed, as well as a new French fryer, stove and dispenser for ice cold milk.
• Hardin Cox, 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army Reserves, has received orders to report September 26 for active duty at Camp Garsch, Colorado. Lieutenant Cox was commissioned at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, recently.
• John Hogue celebrated his 90th birthday Thursday, August 21, and enjoyed a dinner at the Ritz Cafe with guests. John, who lives in his small residence in Navoo, is a former carpenter, farmer, and Rock Port City Marshal.
August 26, 1976
• Mrs. Linnie Hunter and Mrs. Ada Savage were both presented their 50-year membership pin from the Rock Port Chapter No. 440 Order of Eastern Star. Both Mrs. Hunter and Mrs. Savage joined the chapter in 1926. Mrs. Hunter has held eight different offices in the Rock Port chapter besides being worthy matron in 1938.
• Showing at Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “No Deposit No Return” and “Hawmps.”
• Post Office window service hours will be cut beginning August 28. Saturdays, the window will be open from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. instead of until noon. On weekdays, the window will now be closed for a one-hour lunch break.
• Mr. and Mrs. Stan Soske, owners of the Rock Port Gambles Store for almost 30 years, have sold their business to Mr. and Mrs. Greg Curfman of Hamburg, Iowa. The Soskes bought the store in 1947 from Bob McClure when the store was located at 317 S. Main, the current location of Snak-N-Rak. In 1959, they moved the store to its present location at 214 S. Main, a former chair factory.
• The smallest and tallest Rock Port R-2 students were among 683 pupils showing up for classes the first day of school, August 25. The tallest student, Jerry Markham, 17, a senior, is six feet, three inches. The smallest is kindergartner Mary LeLaine Bendon, 5. (The cutline did not include her height, but in the picture she appears to be approximately three feet tall.)

• Junior high football began practicing for the upcoming season. Coached by Stephen Gaines and Troy Sielaff, the team includes 20 energetic players.
• Bob and Marilyn Chapple of Rock Port will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on August 23. They were married at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Salisbury, Missouri, August 23, 1951. The Chapples plan to have a family celebration at the New Dinner Theatre in Kansas City August 26.
• At a recent Rock Port Board of Aldermen meeting, the resignation of Chief of Police Dan Allen was accepted by the board effective Sunday, August 26, 2001. The board voted in executive session to put Jeff Alsup in as interim chief for the time being.
• Dr. Gary Powell has produced a pineapple tomato as well as a pear tomato.
