August 31, 1951

• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “The Gal Who Took The West” starring Yvonne DeCarlo, Charles Coburn, Scott Brady, and John Russell, “Lady Without Passport” with Hedy Lamarr and John Hodiak, “You’re In The Navy Now” with Gary Cooper and Eddie Albert, and “At War With The Army” starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

• Specials at the Market Basket included: Tide, large box for 27¢; Crisco, 3 pounds for 93¢; and Kool Aid, 6 for 23¢.

• As a matter of convenience, the Chamberlain Greenhouse in Rock Port has leased special wire service from Southwestern Bell and the United Telephone Company giving Tarkio patrons a direct wire service to the greenhouse. Patrons may now merely call number 2000 and it is not necessary to ask for Rock Port first when calling.

• A nine-room, two-story tenant house occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Price and 13 children burned to the ground Saturday at the Giffen Ranch eight miles northwest of Tarkio. It is thought that the fire began from a kerosene refrigerator.

September 3, 1976

• The Hy-Vee softball team placed seventh in the state tournament and finished the season 55-16. They finished third in their league. Team members, managed by George Barnett, were Roger Levings, Brian Criswell, Skip Shear, Mike Atkins, Dick Bell, Gordon VanGundy, Bob Wallace, Lloyd Sybert, Joe Stirmlinger, Richard Hawkins, Bill Lindsay, Mike Kenagy, Rick Riley, Richard Martin, and Jeff Barnett, and sponsor John Abbott.

• The Tarkio High School Indian Football Team started practice three weeks ago with 65 showing up for the first day of practice. They have worked out twice a day until school started. Two of the three captains are Tim Austin and Farleigh Farley. The third will be named later.

• Tarkio College will officially begin its 93rd year of operation on September 5 when over 200 new students are scheduled to arrive on campus for a three-day orientation. On September 4, the 12-hour relay sponsored by the Owls’ cross country team will begin at the college track at 6:30 a.m. and the annual alumni/varsity football game will be played at 7:30 p.m. at Kyle Field.

August 30, 2001

• There are only 11 girls out for junior high volleyball this season at Tarkio R-I. Coach Nancy Barrett is being assisted by high school volleyball players Nicole Salmond, Emily Salmond, Jessica Rolf, and Leasa Hicks. The junior high football team has 26 playing. The team is coached by Dean Rolofson.

• Funeral services were held for Laura M. (Uttvits) Johnson, 99, of Rock Port August 25. Her teaching career spanned 25 years in schools in Nebraska and Missouri.

• The Assembly of God Church parsonage at 612 Poplar was damaged by a small fire August 22. An electrical switch in the house caused the fire and the wiring and attic insulation fed the flame.

• Tarkio’s Friendship Day event turned out to be a good location for the new resource center’s benefit auction, which raised $9,951.77.
