September 14, 1951

• Gambles is holding a Grand Opening with gifts for everyone: Coronado gas range, $104.95; Coronado freezer, $228; Crest “multi-grip” tires, $17.95 each; window glass 8×10, 9¢; and 12 gauge shotgun shells, $2.45.

• M. F. Patterson announces that he will have the results of the Tarkio College games available at the Walnut Inn in Tarkio during the 1951 football season. Information regarding the scores may be obtained by calling the hotel telephone 108.

• An unusually large number of people in Tarkio took advantage of the free X-ray visiting from Jefferson City. In Tarkio, 1,046 adults were X-rayed during the three days the unit was here. Westboro had 298 people scanned.

• Construction began last week on the new Tarkio Sales Pavilion one block north of Main on 1st Street. George Hooper of Shenandoah, Iowa, president of the Iowa Livestock Order Buyers, will be the owner of the building.

• At the Tarkio Theatre: “Follow The Sun” with Glenn Ford, Anne Baxter, and Dennis O’Keefe, “The People Against O’Hara” with Pat O’Brien, Dianna Lynn, and John Hodiak, “Purple Heart,” “Raiders Of Tomahawk Creek,” and “Pride of Maryland.”

September 16, 1976

• Rain fell this week – more than the entire month of August. Total rainfall for the month of September stands at 1.08 inch. Temperatures fell also. The weekly low was 50 degrees September 9 and the high was 90 September 7.

• Lee Eddie Stevens’ sweet potato crop was a freak in more ways than one. The plants received only one cup of water while they were planted. The rest was just rain. The plant’s system had to be cut with a corn knife before the parched ground could be dug with a gardening fork. The resulting produce was huge, including an 8 pound whopper.

• Mr. and Mrs. Lester Rolf have returned from a three-week vacation to Germany. In addition to visiting relatives near Osnabruck, they drove along the Rhine River through the Bavarian Alps and into Austria and Switzerland. They also visited the grave of Lester’s brother, Glenn, in the Neuville-En-Condroz United States Military Cemetery near Liege, Belgium.

• The Tarkio College Cross Country Team’s 12-hour relay saw the team members running 120 miles September 4. Running were Alan Apel, Emmett Carty, Dan Hodges, Greg Scails, Joe Tesauro, Kevin Mullaney, Drew Macchia, Bob Morley, Russ Palmer, Mike Sweeney, and coaches Channing Cox and Bill Fox.

• The new water tower in Tarkio is up and running as of 2:15 p.m. Friday, September 7.  At that time, Tarkio Water Company officials switched to the new tower tank. It took two nights to fill the new tank.

• Cowboy poet and singer Brooke Turner was the guest for Opening Day for the Xi Eta Nu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Tarkio on Sunday, August 26, at the First Baptist Church in Tarkio.

• A storm with 70 mile per hour winds and rains hit the Tarkio Indian football game in Weston, Missouri, against West Platte High School, causing umbrellas, jackets, hats, blankets, and even a set of car keys to be lost in the melee.

• The new greenhouse at Tarkio High School has its first plants. Poinsettia plants have arrived and will be for sale this holiday season.
