• At the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Across The Badlands” starring Charles Starrett, “The Mating Season” starring Gene Tierney and John Lund, and “Never A Dull Moment” with Fred MacMurray and Irene Dunne.
• Mrs. Margaret Townsend and son, Harold K., have purchased the 150-acre farm of B. F. Portis, joining the Townsend farm on the north and west. The addition of this farm, which is about four and one-half miles southwest of Fairfax, makes 350 acres the Townsends own. Mr. Portis has lived on the farm he sold for more than 50 years.
• Hunter’s Grocery is holding a Folger’s Coffee guessing contest where winners can receive great prizes. Just come into the store and inspect the gigantic display of Folger’s Mountain-Grown Coffee and register your guess of how many pounds of coffee there is. The contest ends September 22. Prizes to be awarded include a Mir-O-Matic pressure cooker, bathroom scales, electric clock, slicing knives, and plastic aprons.

• The Fairfax Forum office is selling treasured keepsakes. For $5 and $7.50 respectively, purchase a 5-inch or 7-inch candle with your favorite color photo, wedding, or graduation announcement mounted on it.
• Mr. and Mrs. Dean Bolton attended the Democratic Vice-Presidential Candidate Walter Mondale’s Farm Forum at the Charlie Johnson farm in Platte City on Wednesday. Rep. Jim Russell of Savannah and Senator Tom Eagleton accompanied Mondale as he toured the farm viewing the drought stricken crops.
• Some 200 Shriners and their ladies paraded through downtown Fairfax Saturday morning in the Moila “Caravan of Hope.” The caravan spread the word about Shriners’ support of 22 hospitals for crippled and burned children.
• About 350 people attended an open house at Fairfax Implement on Saturday. Albert Evans was the winner of an International snow blower, Marilyn Alldredge won a garden tiller, and Jim Rader won a push mower.

• Clint Gayler of Rock Port has hit the ground running as the new Atchison County Development director. He has attended civic meetings and is in the middle of getting the office organized.
• The twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, New York, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., were struck by hijacked planes and a fourth hijacked plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Thousands have lost their lives.
• Over 1,000 tires were taken to the waste tire collection at the Atchison County Landfill site between Tarkio and Rock Port on Highway 136 Saturday morning. Approximately 888 car and passenger truck tires, 148 semi truck tires, and 43 rear tractor tires were collected from residents of Atchison, Holt, Nodaway, and Worth counties.
• The Fairfax Jr. High cheerleaders held a pie eating contest for the junior high football team during the football supper. The winner of the pie eating contest was Kenny Pinzino, who won a bag of candy and a stuffed bulldog.
• Robbie Pester, Michael Oswald, and A.J. Harding, juniors at Fairfax High School, were chosen by teammates to lead the Bulldogs this season as captains.
